    Default Recommended Brands for Fasteners

In the context of screws and nails.
Who are the quality brands (In Australia)? I've found Otter to be pretty consistent with quality but not stocked in every hardware store.
Zenith at the other end of the scale I've usually found to be very average but there must be some other brands around that are ok, so I'm looking for names to watch out for in the stores when I cannot find Otter brand.

Macsim. I know they do dyna-bolts and the like, not sure about screws and nails, and they're quite good.

Never heard of that brand. Maybe bolt specialty places carry them.

Again, not a brand I'd heard off before, just had a look at their site. I'm assuming it's only online ordering, no retail outlets?

I've always been unimpressed with Otter.... I like James Glen for stainless, and I use heaps of Buildex treated timber self tappers.

sachys robertson are great to deal with never had a problem use their screws for decks and pocketholes heaps cheaper and very strong. Bill & Jill have just retired but Rob and Ann promise to keep the service and stocks the same.
they have a nice introductory offer to their screws in the specials section I tried some, liked them and have been using them for few years now. Sachys Robertson Screws

in 30+ years in the workforce, I think I've only ever seen ONE retail fastner specialist and they only lasted a year or so.

Bunnings, Mitre10, Home Hardware seem to carry one fastner brand or another in most sizes -- I've bought Mascim stuff from one of those three

Blackwoods probably carry the best range, but I'm not sure if they do retail

We have a few retail supplying fastener places in Newcastle, I would assume Sydney/Melbourne should too. Usually far cheaper than general retail hardware.... and you can buy in any amount.

Macsim is a fairly common brand; you should find them in a hardware shop within driving distance (unless you live in the outback). I think Elraco Distributors (Hardware Online) carry a lot of their stuff.

Sachys Robertson have been around for a few years, and I've had nothing but good experiences with them. The new owners will probably (I hope!) take the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach and for the most part carry on the business along existing lines.

Macsim is available at my hardware store in Caulfield South.

The only fasteners I have problems with are those supplied with items. Stripped heads or breaking off when half inserted, often they get put into the bin and I just use what I have in my collection. A little bit of lubrication can often make a huge difference.

Slightley off topic but I was given packets of nails and screws by an old bloke having a clean out of his shed, they still had the stickers on them from"Arcana Hardware" (long defunct). Packets of 100, price around $3.75
