Thread: Recommended workbench timber top

Hi Jill, I have to admit here that I got the name wrong on the beams when I refered to LVL. Associated the name and product from usage by others, and stuffed up.
LVL is actually laminated softwood veneers, rather than laminated timber chunks, so that is similar to long narrow plywood except that the grain orientation is always along the beam rather than alternating at 90 degrees as with ply.
The things I was thinking of are laminated F17 hardwood beams similar to these. There seems to be plenty of suppliers for both types of beam. Hynes make both and have a branch in Cairns which could either supply direct or supply a builders supply near you. My local Bunnings has the lam beams in some sizes as a stock line, and my local timber bargain centre normally have them as well.
My strategy if I go this way is to scrape any excess glue and then give the beams a pass each side through the thicknesser to dress and level the surface.
