    Default red oak/knot holes

recently finished a red oak kitchen table and attempted to fill 20 mm knots with clear epoxy, very opaque now. Question: how do I repair the epoxy or remove this mess and what do you all fill your knots with to get a clear finish. Please help, drdave

I wonder what grit sandpaper you have used so far? Your description sounds as if the epoxy fill is scratched because the grit used has been relatively coarse and the surface is, consequently, a matt finish.

If this is the case, continue sanding (the whole table top, not just the epoxy areas) progressively up to 600 grit (at least). The epoxy should be clear by then.

Alternatively, if you coat the epoxy areas (e.g. with varnish) they may appear clear (but scratches may also be visible).

    Regards from Perth

Have you tested the mix to see if it is actually clear? A glass jar would be ok for this. Maybe a contaminent, or incorrect mix ratio, or perhaps not actually mixed properly.

Heat usually weakens the bond of epoxy, usually around 85+ deg, so boiling water or a heat gun. Just don't burn the wood.

If it is a deep hole, don't sand between pours, just pour a bit in, let is set, pour a bit more etc, until you get to the top.
