redgum slabs

Hi all.

I have six large slabs of Forest Redgum. Terretetcornis mostly free from defects like sap lines and loose knots.. A few of the slabs are perfect a couple have sap lines.
They were all cut from the same tree localy in about 1997.
There are flat slabs all 2.8 varying in width from the biggest which is 870mm at one end to 830mm at the other and about 35mm to 50mm thick.
The smallest is about 630mm with little or no taper.
All the others are in between these sizes.
I also have a fair quantity of 5’X5’ from the same tree with other sizes like 8X2 and stuff.
They seem from defects.
I don’t know what they are worth but I am having to move house.
And all the timber is too big to move with me.
So I am wondering if I should sell it or make it into furniture which I could them sell.
I think it would be easier to sell all the big stuff which is too big for me to move anyway.
I have some other large seasoned timbers as well.
So I would love to hear from you if you are interested or have any advice.

You'd probably sell it quicker as it is. But you'd get more for it as some sort of furniture. Depends on how much time you have I guess.

How stable is the Forest Redgum to changes in humidity? If it's like Woolybut then I am not too interested, howevr if stable, then how much a cube? As I'm at Batemans Bay, could be of interest.

Jacko, I find it fairly stable, I bought some from down near Bega last year and have been using it for small items. The tree it was cut from was dead a fair few years but the timber was still wet, stacked and stickered it, dried without moving much at all. Don't know how it would go for furniture but the sawmiller said that a furniture shop from Bega was coming out to buy some. Hope that helps, if I lived where you do I would go and get some.

From experience, it's not as stable as Spotted Gum for joinery work. I would imagine that fairly wide slabs 50mm thick would have some seasonal movement.

I am not sure what it is worth but it has been sujested that the slabs are worth about one thousand each and te rest of it about 3 or 4 thousand a cube. I made some furniture rom the red gum and it is quite stable and very hard and heavy.
I also have some ten inch by one inch spoted gum that is dry

They'd wana be perfect for 1K each seeming they are only 2.8 long.(IMHO)

Put them on eBay, will give you an idea.
Or go to a wood merchant, & sell the lot to him.
Could have too wait a fair while to sell here at those type of prices, would have to wait for somebody in desperate need.

Slabs aren't an exact science, but I think your looking at closer to $100 per slab. Once dressed and finished you may be able to buck up the price a bit.

A few slabs around that size have recently sold on Ebay between $200-$300 if thats any help

Yes some of them are perfect and i have similar at wood shows at about that price and i have also seen similar made into tables that sold for many thousand .. but all is neqotable ... i am thinking of having it all transproted to sydeny where it may sell quicker.
in my experience tiber of this quality is not often available... but would discount for quick sale.
