I will confirm what Denghy says. I often use 3mm MDF templates held with double sided tape on many timbers including kwila/merbau (but not northern silky oak). My experience is:
    • use as little tape as possible,
    • remove tape as soon as possible - it "hardens" with age,
    • use just removed tape to remove recalcitrant bits,
    • use acetone as solvent of last resort (rarely needed).

    Shellite.

Magic stuff. Removes every form of goo/glue/sticky Ive ever had.

When acetone, metho, turps, methanol (IMS) and Isopropyl dont budge it.... Shellite removes it with but a wipe.

    Absolute magic.

(i.e. its probably guaranteed to be radioactively cancerous because it IS so good, just like chocolate mudcake! .... mmmmm, mudcake).
