Default How do I remove pee / urine stink from an antique table?

    Hello
If there is a better forum for this type of question, please let me know.

I have here this antique table that I obtained just yesterday. It is french poilished.
It really really smells bad. It is a urine stink smell and it is mostly around the bottom of the base, in particular where the base stands on the floor but some is also on the top.

Whoever had this, must have had animals peeing on and around this table.

I have so far washed the table down with turps, and I have also tried refloating the fininish a bit with spirits.

All in all, I had moderate success in that the smell appeared to be better at the time but this morning, it is as strong as ever. My whole workshop stinks.

The table and base are veneered. The finish is still quite presentable and I don't wabnt to necessarily strip it down as it would ruin the patina.

I am not sure what to try next.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

    Best regards
    Bernt

You could try stuff from the vets that neutralizes urine smells. Usually for new smells, so I'm not sure how it will go for old smells. "Fabreeze" also is supposed to get rid of smells but adds its own smell which kinda disappears when it dries.

Also a few things after googling!

    Hello Tea Lady

    Thanks for the reply!
After reading the links, I now wonder if whitewine vingear would damage the finish.
I might just try this from underneath the base and see if it 'pulls' out any of that smell.

We've just done a disgusting stinking floor that had been soaked with dog urine and excrement building up for fifteen years. Soap and water no effect. Strong bleach and scrubbing brush (twice) no effect. Sugar soap and wire brush worked like a charm. Next day no smell at all.

Usea caustic soda solution or other stripper to strip the whole thing back and bleech it . Then sand it up smooth and re stain in a sunlight resistant Wattle spirit stain . Then re laquer or French Polish .
The problem with smells from bacterial action is that they re-activate every time the article gets wet or damp or even in high humidity so once it is totally re sealed it will stop smelling.

Would like to avoid that. This table is antique (older than 100 years).
It is still original and it will never be the same again if I do this.

However, there ist that terrible smell....

On a seperate note, I find the local stains very limited in colours and variety. Bunnings only ever used to have a hand full of colours and now they don't even stock Wattyl at all.

Wash it with some white vinegar. Don't dry it off. If it smells again the next day repeat until it stops smelling. I don't like your chances though. Probably will have to spirit off the French polish, use the vinegar again on bare wood and then refinish.

Thanks Michael. that is good advise. I can only try...

I have also noticed the following: I stuch some masking tape around the feet, to hold some loose veneer edges in place. I just pulled this off and noticed that it came off with a deep yellow stinky goo on it. I wonder if this is repeatable and will pull out some of the urine.
I have stuck more tape on and will see again tomorrow.

If this is the case, I might try resting the base in a pan of poolsalt.
Maybe that will draw out some more of this stuff.

    WIll have to see.

    Best regards

BTW: I would love to support the smaller places like Mitre ten but here, they are the most useless place ever. They have lots of empty spaces instead of stock, the nuts and bolts are a total mess with everything mixed together and out of stock, nobody knowing anything + no prices on a lot of stuff. I have had to stop going there because I ran ot of patience with such poor service.

You can get some stuff at safeway called "cleaning vinegar". Its like 80c for 4 litres and was made from sugar cane. I had a house where an animal went over the carpet on it went into the floorboards so even when the carpet came up it still smelt. Poured the cleaning vinegar over it and it killed it all off.
Did smell like vinegar for a few days.

The enzymes you get from the VET, Thats what you pout on a carpet when it happens and the enzymes eat the things that make the stink (expensive stuff). Not sure how it goes after the event.

One of the best substance to remove smells is Carb Soda, this can be by making up a paste and or just sprinkling around the unit. It works a charm in removing cat urine smell in litter trays and on carpets.
