I have always carried a pocket knife since I was 6, well ok 7, at 6 I carved up mums screen door and lost it for a year, so thats normally the first line of attack, just take out the offending area and wrap with tape if the bleeding doesn't stop or you might put blood on the job. It can be electrical tape, masking tape, duct tape, rag, etc. Real men just don't use bandaids!!

    Ichthammol ointment.

Made of aluminum bituminosulphate (a distillate from high-sulfur oil shale), yellow soft paraffin and wool fat. I'll stick to my turps, thanyouverymuch.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

    Sounds a bit like vegemite.

BTW, my splinter came out today. I was poking it and the end popped out and sat up to be pulled. Bloddy enormous it was. 4mm long. Think I'll turn a goblet out of it like powderpost's

When I was a kid we used Magnaplasm 'to draw splinters and pus. Others swore by Antiflagestin. Needles tweezers and pocket knives were used by all ofthe tough blokes.

Since found an easy way to avoid getting splinters - I've stopped scratching my head.

Magnaplasm! Now there's an old-school remedy with a great name. Always sounded to me like it should do something a lot more impressive than it does. Works wonders though...

I recall as a splinter-prone kid chopping the firewood, mum would prefer the pin technique whereas dad preferred the pocket knife. Either way I quickly learned to deal with them on my own.
