    Dean,

Your review is very nice but unfortunately you omitted probably the most valuable use of the vernier caliper and that is: Use the tail end of the scale against the surface, slide the caliper open and get the protrusion on the tail to the bottom of the dado, hole, etc. Then read off the depth of the dado, hole or whatever you are measuring exactly. This function alone makes it a worthwhile purchase. Great for measuring recesses on the lathe as well as all the normal functions that you have mentioned.
Perhaps you would like to update the review with a picture of the vernier caliper being used for this type of measurement.

Dean, thanks for yet another excellent tool review. I wouldn't be without a set of calipers in the workshop. Still finding new ways of using them.

    Hi Dean, nice review.

I have exactly the same calipers I bought from a local supplier here in NZ. I don't regret one bit buying calipers with a digital scale. They are extremely easy to read particularly now that my close up vision is starting to deteriorate. They get used extensively in my workshop and around the house and yes, I'd agree with Joe, one of the more common uses is measuring the depths of dados and slots.

And don't forget the two flat faces at the other end! These are used to accurately measure across shoulders. I also use this end for mark-ups, set the depth and away you go, a nice edge to scribe against.

The slide rail that comes out from the end when sliding open makes a great depth gauge, I mainly use mine to set the rocker jig for extreme accuracy... within .02mm!
