My River Coffee Table
Hi all,
I've been spending a lot of time recently experimenting with resin. This was my first project using resin. A woman gave me this red cedar slab a few years ago and its just been laying around my shed. So it seemed a logical thing to try out my first go at using resin. I learned a lot about resin just from this. The finish on the table itself is about 12 coats of polyurethane/white spirits 50/50 wiped on with a paper towel. Then very very finely cut back and polished with auto polish. Come up just like glass.

Hi Havabeer, as this was my first attempt at resin, I took a lot of measures. I bought a large piece of that white melamine from Bunnings, large enough to sit my slab on. I put packing tape all over the top of it. I clamped pieces of melamine with tape over it, to each end. This ensured that I could get the slab and resin off when it was cured. I had the slab clamped to the melamine also. So a lot of mucking about really. I used silicone along the edges of the river like barricades to stop overflow of resin. I also drilled holes into the slab where I cut the river, for added strength, whether this was really necessary, not really sure.
Then after that heap of sanding.

Looks beautiful Paul. Are the legs wood or metal? Do you think the tape was necessary to prevent the resin sticking to the melamine?
Looks like you're having lot's of fun with these resin creations.Dallas

Hey there Dallas, And thanks, I'm pretty happy with it. The legs are solid steel and very weighty, powder coated black. I do think the tape was necessary as I have spilt resin on melamine during other pours and it doesn't come off.
And yes I am enjoying this resin chapter, a lot of experimenting mainly for my box lid inserts.

Hi Paul,
What sort of tape did you use? Did you use the regular brown packing tape typically used to tape up boxes?
Nice legs by the way. I used 40x40 square tubing I welded into two rectangles, similar to what you did, and used them for a hall table.
Thanks
John

the couple of resin filling jobs I've had to do the tape could never contain the resin, I tried some masking tape varians, "water resistant" duct tapes and they've all let resin out.
I've since found a product called "tuck tape" which I bought from amazon I think. some youtuber recommended it, but its a plastic gaffer style tape used for joining sheets of plastic on building sites. I'm yet to give this a go though

Yep its a real bugger when you're pouring resin and then you see a wet patch on the floor and there's nothing you can do. I started using masking tape and had the failures. Then one day in West Systems shop I seen this foil tape that works for me when I've filled voids and cracks in timber.
Anyway Paul I have a question, How did you fix the slab to the leg frames and is there any movement/wobble when pushed from the ends?
By the way nice tableExperienced in removing the tree from the furniture
