    Default Router Advice

Maybe this query should be in the tool forum... but it relates to working with wood "generally"....

I'm looking for a hand held router (ie doesn't have to be particularly suited to a router table set-up) to do morticing and edge work. The "perfect" router would have a dust extractor port / attachment and have a good depth control mechanism for controlled morticing.

I bought a Triton router 12 months ago because it has a dust port and the plunge mechanism can be controlled by a winding handle. However the handle gets stiff & "stuck" all the time (I blow it clean, but it still doesn't work properly - doesn't wind down easily or fully, which means it's also a real hassle to change bits. It's in the repair shop. Again.) And the router opening is too small for large round-over bits (the plastic dust port gets in the way)...

Any info / input from satisified router owners much appreciated...

    Thanks,

    Richard

    Gidday RichardWoodhead

I Bought A Dewalt 621 And Absolutely Love it!!!..................My Journey with it to date can be Found Here:

    http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=15178

This is a top class 2HP Plunge Router if not the BEST!!! Also Check out Pat Warners Website here for a rundown on the Dewalt 621:

    http://www.patwarner.com/dw621.html

To Date this has been my Best Powertool Purchase!!!..........I LOVE IT!!!............ However I would'nt use it for Table Routing. When I finally get around to getting my Hands on A Router Table I'll be setting up a Hitachi M12V in it.

Thanks Lou. Always a font of knowledge and info. I'm keen to look into the Dewalt range (I was interested to read comments in your thread about the DW 625?). My Triton is (I think) 3 HP. Assume you have no trouble cutting say 20 mm mortices to 60 mm depth with the 2 HP 621? It looks like a really nice router and has the dust extraction I'm keen on. Thanks again. (I had a premonition today that you'd answer my query!)

I believe the 621 has a maximum plunge depth of around 50mm. However with some of the Longer Shank Bits that are floating around these days you maybe able to go Deeper. With the Addition of Rockers Mortising Jig Routing Mortises presents few problems!!!!

So far 2HP has been more than adequate for all the Jobs I have thrown at the 621 .........to date mostly Flush Trimming and when set up the Dust extraction is up there with the Best in the Business

............After finally accepting that there is no such thing as the perfect Router I decided that the 621 would be the best compramise for all my needs............If its Hand Held Plunge Routing your wanting your Router to deliver the Goods on then I highly recommend the 621.

However for Table Routing as mentioned I would'nt go under a 3HP Router Particularly if you want to drive some of the Larger Bits floating round these DAys!!!!...................I too was going to Buy a Triton for this until I discovered through forum members here the exact problem you have been talking about!!...............

At this stage I'm leaning towards a Hitachi (The M12v) for Table use as they have a Bullet Proof reputation some members stating there Hitachi's are still going strong after 20+ years of use!!!!!

Keep us posted on what path you end up heading down Richard!!!!

Isn't that strange! I have a M12 that was mounted in my table, but lack of dust collection from the base, lousy depth mechanism and poor depth lock performance made me look for an alternative when buying another router so the table could have its own dedicated tool. I chose the Triton and have been very pleased with all aspects other than the soft start is not quite soft enough imho.

Lou / Jacko, I've used the Triton router (in a Triton router table top - which accepts the router VERY quickly as they're co-designed for each other) and highly recommend it for that purpose. I'll keep my triton permanently in the router table. It has above table easy bit changing, dust extraction below & above table, fine depth adjustment, etc. But won't take large bits (raised panel, large round-over etc) unless you remove the plastic dust extraction thingy.)

My big hassle was the handle plunging mechanism for hand held routing gets stiff & stuck. Don't know why as I clean it out etc.

    Thanks,

    Richard

    Thx Jacko

..................Now I'm not leaning towards the Hitachi mmmmmmmmm maybe the Big Bosh????

I've always been A closet Triton Fan and had dreams of getting one for permanent table use until I came across this problem here:

Any comments on Forum members experience with this issue really appreciated!!!!!

Lou, I hadn't seen the problem post, but have had similar hassles with my Triton. To the point even the wind-down plunge handle gets stiff / stuck. And the plunge mechanism seizes up. (That's why mine in in the repair shop now).

I've been researching Dewalt routers. Anybody used the DW 125? It has more grunt and a deeper plunge (60mm versus 50 mm). Which would suit my needs with hard dry jarrah. But looks like no built in dust extraction. Nothings perfect I guess!

I have a 20 year old TR12 still going strong, I use this in a table, I had a Triton table (borrowed) and wasn't happy with it but was happy to give it back to the owner. I bought a de Walt 621 and this is one of the best buys Iv'e ever made, great performance but needs an off set base. Look up Pat Warner's web site.

    Hi Richard,

I have a DeWalt 621, but have relegated it to use on my WoodRat.

For hand-held use, precision depth of cut, dust extraction, bellows-enclosed posts for smooth and consistent depthing/plunging, relative quietness, sufficiency of power, and a generally well made and indestructible feel, I'd recommend the Bosch GOF1300ACE (I can't recall the last three letters:just did - see edit), but it's the blue-green "tradesman" quality (rather than the green "hobby" quality) tool.

    Cheers!

Rob, can you elaborate on the need for an offset base? And Pat Warners web site? Don't know what that refers to.

    Thanks,

Steve, I've been google searching Bosch routers but can't locate the GOF 1300 ACE. There was a POF 1300 but it was a smaller / cheaper model (UK prices) and looked like a hobby model. Can you check the model again. I'm heading to Perth week after next for the wood show and will look into the Bosch range.

    Thanks for the info.
