G"day Les,
Superior rubber bands from the newsagent or Office supplies. There is a thread under Rubber bands somewhere here which lists the sizes.
Found it

The rubber in office-supplies bands tends to dry out over time and lose elasticity; becomes quite brittle. Tyre inner tubes are much more robust. Bicycles, cars, trucks, airplanes, etc. Used airplane tyre inner tubes cannot usually be re-used when the tyres are replaced (by law in most developed countries), so freebies may be available at your local air park. Bicycle tubes can be cut and knotted to whatever size needed. For other sizes, cut across the torus, straight or on the bias (even an extreme bias). Also convenient as closures for tool boxes without latches (e.g. original cardboard containers).

Les,
Try your local Hobby Shop. Some of the R/C Aircraft fliers use large rubber bands to attach the wings of their pride and joy. Means when they prang the wings can come off without destroying the fuselage...maybe

For really big bands, try theraband or theratubing. It is sold by the metre and should be available from most physio's for around $15 a metre. It is a latex based product and should last for about 12 months before it starts to break down. From memory, the black band has the greatest strength. http://www.thera-band.com/resistive.html

Some tyre places will give you old inner tubes if ask nicely. Cut them into 1''strips. The rubber will last for a few glue up jobs

Big Bands
Section off Tractor REAR wheel Tubes for
Really Really large.
From there use a whole Car Tube;
10"
13"
15" and 16" they are about the same;
From there up, they are 'USUALLY' all Tubeless Tyres
Then step up to Motorcycle tubes
then
Pushbike tubes.
What about Okky straps?Navvi

It is good for gluing laminations on a shaped form. Gives more uniform pressure than clamps.
