Default Sanding drum on spindle moulder?

I made up some sanding drums that are driven by my drill press. They work fine. I'd like an oscillating sander, but am not willing to spend the necessary loot at this stage.

Since that time I bought a Jet spindle moulder, and have been told that I can fit a sanding drum to this machine. Because dust collection is good on the moulder, and because it is easier to use the table to steady the work, a sanding drum on the moulder is an attractive option.

Does anyone have any experience/comments ... good or bad? Noted that Carba Tec sells such drums with a 1/2" bobbin.

    Thanks,

    John

I like the idea, but what is the moulder's minimum speed? My concern here would be the spindle turning too fast and burning the timber with anything other than the lightest touch

Higher quality bobbin/oscillating sanders typically use 1400 rpm but I note they do come with a sanding option which probably uses the lowest speed (~1700 rpm) although you might be able to go to the next step with smaller drums.

One problem with using a moulder as a sander is that they are not oscillating so they will clog faster.

What are your home made drums made off, what sort of bearings did and you use, and how well are the weighted ? If the spindle moulder was accidentally cranked up to 8000 rpm there might be a problem.

    Bob,

My home made drums are made of ply discs glued together with a bolt through the middle. Very high tech! They have fabric backed sandpaper glued on in the same way you put paper on a sanding drum ... no way these are going on a spindle moulder! They get used on the drill press only.

    Cheerio!
