I only know one person with a Sawstop and his experience is quite similar.

For those less unfamiliar with Sawstop than me, when a sawstop is triggered an explosive charge releases a half inch thick aluminium brake which slams into the spinning saw blade and stops it within about a quarter of a turn. Its a mechanical action, very violent and a lot of enrgy is expended stopping the blade. Energy = heat!

    Attachment 470312

The blade is treated very roughly, the heat may weld the brake to the blade and often the blade needs replacing. Cost of a Sawstop cartridge is around $150. Plus blade. Plus cost of down time until the cartridge and blade are replaced. Occasionally there has been other damage such as to the saw bearings.

My acquaintance reported a similar number of Sawstop firings from green timber, metal contamination, etc, as you mention, and a repeated but seemingly inexplicable "false firing" with clean dry timber. Eventually this was traced to one of his favourite timbers - celery top pine (Phyllocladus aspeniifolius) - which when dry is a mild electrical conductor. For about 40% of his business when sawing celery top he has to disconnect the Sawstop which rather defeats the point of having it.

I suspect that he will soon upgrade to a slider!

are you sure its an explosion?

i thought it was just a spring loaded relay, so gets the electrical signal from the blade being touched, turns off the magnet and releases the spring.

Dunno for sure. I don't have a Sawstop.

I have seen only one "after event". A Sawstop cartridge that was very rigidly welded onto a 300mm saw blade. Both had very extensive heat marks and a strange smell - explosive residue or ozone or burnt lubricant or burnt dust on the cartridge or ... ????

So I rang my acquaintance and he said: "You can hear the explosion when it triggers; its really loud."

When Saw Stop first came out, I had a conversation with a Saw Stop MARKETING Representative (Emphasis "MARKETING".) at a Woodworking Show or AWFS. I was examining a used brake and the saw blade. It was an expensive saw blade, Forrest brand. I commented that it was about $70 for the brake and $100+ for the blade or about $200 in total but cheaper than an ER co-pay.

The MARKETING Representative kind of laughed and said that the techs at Saw Stop had been able to remove the blade from the brake. Thinking about that. . . . A bent tooth? How good is the brazing? I don't think that I would want to re-use the blade.

i've set my brake off twice.

one blade looked salvageable, the other had at least one loose tooth. both still went in the bin, just not worth the risk of a piece of carbide to come flinging off at you at a few 1000 RPM's

while it is annoying blades and brakes are cheap compared to loosing or damaging a finger. Also remember that you can send you brake back to saw stop and they will send out (at least one) free brake. they use the telemetry data from it to make sure things are working as they should.

Were either of your deployments because you touched the blade? If so then the technology has indeed possibly saved you a finger, if not then all it has proved to be is a PITA, and an expensive one at that. I for one am not looking to make my tablesaw blades any more of a consumable than they already are.

both where me touching the blade, i literally felt it nick my index finger and by that time it had slammed stopped.

you can turn off the sensor and just use it as a normal saw or if you think your wood is too wet.

I'm hoping that even with a Sawstop, no one ever needs it. It's still a sharp, fast moving blade. Good practice and pushsticks should always be used. I love watching Diresta on youtube but cringe every time I see him use a tablesaw.

Every time I see a YT video with the user reaching over the top of a running blade I shudder.

pretty much, but i can also touch type with all 10 fingers because of it. its that one instance in 10,000 (well i guess mine is 1 in 5000 ) when something happens that a safety feature like that pays for its self.
