Another screen door WIP
I need a new screen door to match the new house we are building, so I was quietly minding my own business searching for inspiration and didn't realise SWMBO was in the kitchen watching, the conversation went like this...
Her: I like that
Me: Yeah its nice isn't it
Her: yeah I want that on my house
Me: Ok will make a couple of changes for us
Her: (cutting me off) no make me that one... (pause) please
So here is the WIP which is a blatant rip off (with permission) of our own Ruffly's screen door.
Frame is New Guinea Rosewood and squiggles (a patented tm of Ruffly inc) are Syd Blue Gum. Have been working on this one for a couple of weeks but should finish next weekend (hopefully sooner) Squiggles will be fitted on dowels (more for alignment than structural) and all joints will be with epoxy. Haven't decided on a finish yet but will be oil (whats a good exterior oil?).
Comments and suggestions are appreciated/welcome
(I have progress shots of the squiggles in but thought that might ruin the unveiling of the finished product)

Hi Corbs,
The screen door is looking good I think the rosewood is going to look a real treat. And as for the Squiggles, well , I thought I recognised them .
Looking forward to seeing more
cheers

Nice effort......glad to see that there are a few examples to go to school on when the time comes for our five new screen doors........
As for an external timber oil.........I'm having a good experience with the Integrain Timber Oil in "Natural" tint from Orica http://www.intergrain.com.au/ (all the tech data is on the NZ site)......about $18 per litre in 1L, 4L and 10L quantities from Bunnings et al.Ours is not to reason why.....only to point and giggle.

Silent,
You have probably already seen it but when using your examples for your door don't forget Zenwoods screen door too. Thanks for the advice on the oil too, will check it out.
Wendy,
I have fully acknowledged your trademark on the squiggles (gotta say I love em though)

Actually, it was Zen's screen door that inspired me to build mine. I remember we had a discussion about the supports in the door to stop it skewing with the weight. If I remember correctly, Zen used the z-style of supports and I opted for my trademark of Squiggles. If anyone's wondering, the Squiggles started with a coffee table and have taken on a life of their own (by the way, the coffee table still isn't finished yet but that's another story).
Corbs, it's great to see another wooden screen door being built and appreciated. I think they beat the metal screen doors any day (except where high security is needed, of course )
Intergrain is pretty good stuff in my books. I was tossing up between intergrain, feast watson and sikkens and liked the sikkens the best for that particular door.
Cheers

Ok then... longer than I intended but I got the keys to the new house on Saturday so have been concentrating elsewhere recently. But the door is finished so here is the final product. Not as much contrast between the NG Rosewood & Sydney BG but the Blue Gum was in the shed and did what I needed. Door is a lot lighter than I expected but am very happy with how it came up. Will probably take me a little while to mount on the house but when its on will put another pic up in its natural environment. Thanks again to Wendy for the inspiration on this one.
Enjoy...
