Default US screw/bolt sizes - Australian equivalents

    Hi,

I have a DIY 'recipe' requiring the following items, but I am unsure of their AU/metric equivalents and can't seem to find any decent information online (I suspect I'm getting the terminology wrong). Any help would be super appreciated:

    #10 Washers
#10-24 Machine Screws, Hex Nuts, Wing Nuts
    1/4"-20 Screw

    Cheers,
    Richard

The # is the gauge size and the second number is the threads per inch of the screw.
#10 is around 4.8 mm or 3/16" in diameter and 1/4" is 6.4mm in diameter.
You could use 5 and 6mm as an alternative to the American sizes although if you needed a particuler thread to match an existing nut you should be able to get both of those sizes from a specialty bolt supplier.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Instead of going to one of the 'big box' stores, just go to an industrial fastener supplier - Coventry Fasteners in Sydney, other names in Melbourne.

As there are millions of dollars worth of pre-metric and US made machines out there, they stock a full range of 'Imperial' as well as US thread fasteners. Some even sell them singly as well as by the box.
