    Question screw job

    Hey all,
I am in the process of building a music stand for a friend. To control the height of the I could use a threaded insert and a brass screw, but I would rather fabricate a wooden thumbscrew - it really would work the same way a marking gauge works; loosen the screw, adjust the height and then tighten the screw. Making the wood screw is easy. Does anyone have any suggestions at to how to tap the hole I tried a search, but did not see anything apt.

    G'day Jimbo,

Make the same screw (as the one you made in wood) in metal and then turn it into a tap by tapering the screw and putting several lengthwise cuts into the screw.

I have made a tap for wooden pieces that were riding on threaded rods by taking a piece of the same threaded rod and doing the above to it.

Jimbo, try a search on wooden threads, or might be mentioned in Best of the Best.

This was covered in detail a while ago and well worth reading through, one idea that was mentioned was using the innards of an old garden tap for tapping the threads in the hole, not sure how easy making a mating male thread would be though.
