    Default Which Screws?

    Hi All,

I just wanted to seek some advise on which screws should be used in the following situations.

    1. The first task is the screw some pine battens onto the steel purlins of the shed. I don't particularly want to predrill the pine so I was thinking something along the lines of Countersunk Wing Tip Phillips Head (Image 1). If the battens were 35mm what would be the minimum length of the screw required to get purchase into the steel purlin?

    2. The second task is to screw some 19mm chipboard to the newly attached pine battens (see task 1). This will be 19mm chipboard into 35mm pine. I cant work out if drilling the chipboard to the pine would require particle board screws (Image 2) or chipboard screws (Image 3). In this case is the type of screw dependent on the material being screwed through (eg the chipboard) or the material being screwed into (eg the pine)?

Any advice would be appreciated before I place an order.

    Cheers

    Stinky.

I'd suggest 40-45mm for the steel screws and 50mm chipboard screws

    (1) the wing Tek screws are exactly what you use to fix timber to metal framing. The wing tabs pre drill the timber on the way through, then break off when the screw enters the metal, and the fine thread is designed to Tap a thread into the steel. You should have about 10 to 15mm of screw penetration into the metal. 8 to 10 gauge wing teks are what you need.

(2). The best screws for chip board will have a large coarse thread. You will want to countersink the head and allow maximum penetration into the receiving piece
Of timber, without coming out the other side of coarse. Some chipboard screws have self countersink ridges around the head, which at best will leave them flush with the face of the timber. 6 to 8 gauge particle or chipboard screws are the go.
    I never forget anything I remember !!
