    Default Screws into old Jarrah

Can anyone tell me a way to screw some door handles into well seasoned Jarrah please? Even after drilling the right sizes holes, the screws are breaking off.

Predrill and wax the screw threads with parafin wax or use candle wax, make sure your screws are of good quality

If its realy tough, pre-drill and insert a small tipped soldering iron into the hole for 5 or 10 seconds. It will slightly enlarge the hole, and with some wax (or a small squirt of WD40) quickly screw in and out with a steel screw, then the brass screw.

Don't be afraid to use a larger drill than you would normally use for a given screw size. Your pilot hole needs to be only slightly smaller diameter than the outside diameter of the thread on the screw. drag the screw across a block of wax or bar of soap before screwing.

the guys are serious about the wax. I think the solerding iron is a little OTT, but flog a candle from indoors... you should have one anyway for your plane soles? and just drag it down the thread.

THIS IS GREAT IF YOUR BATTERY Is GOING FLAT ON YOUR CORDLESS AND YOU ONLY HAVE 4 MORE SCREWS TO GO.

    Good luck

Cooking oil also works fine as a lubricant. (eg vegetable, olive, margerine, butter) The screws that come with furniture fittings from Bunnings&Mitre10 are usually crap; either replace with good quality screws or use a good quality screw to cut the threads for the crap screws.

    Cheers
