Sea Chest
Hi All,
I have just joined Woodwork to help find someone to build a future heirloom sea chest for my family, this is what I hope to achieve Whaler Chest I'm in the process of finding some huon pine for the chest, I've tracked down the plans, hinges, handles, cleats and copper nails, just need to find a blacksmith to knock up a lock clasp and small hooks.
So if anyone can recommend someone who likes small projects in perth, Please let me know..
Thanks
Mick

Perth?? Bugger These chests are so beautiful.
You could post a thread here asking for a Perth Forumite's assistance.
You could see if the Perth Wood School might be able to assist, or give you some contacts.
You could also post a thread inthe Metalwork Forum area here for making the lock clasp and small hooks.
cheers

there may well be someone willing to make that chest, but if it's done comercially what do you think the cabinet maker's time is worth? My first guess is at least 10 hours to build, may be as many as 20regards from Alberta, Canada

about what I'd expect for
Hand planing from rough sawn planks ... hand cut dovetails ... hand forged hardware ... hand made handlesI know it's hard to swallow, but if a maker would like to earn around $1200 per week, their charge out rate needs to be about $70 per hour, to cover the time the maker spends doing their books, marketing their services, paying rent, buying tools, etc.
so a 20 hour build (not unreasonable for sizing the boards by hand and double angled dovetails) would need to be costed at $1400 plus materials, say $400, the total comes to about $1,800.
a consignment retailer would try to sell for 2 x the maker's required returnregards from Alberta, Canada

Just the rope handles (beckets) alone take about 30hrs to complete, sea chest maybe 20/30 hrs, plus buying the black smithed hinges and clasp $300.00, so when you look into it, really you get the materials for free!!! I could never play down what goes into this kind of thing nor the workman ship, its just I would like to put together my own version in Aus huon pine, made in AU...

I remember that chest from the exhibition, I really liked your boxes, but what remains in my memory is the carved cabinet (by Hedley Neil?). Looking at it you would swear that some of the carving was really cloth material
