Default How to secure the great Aussie Shed???

    Gidday:eek:

Well after me car got burnout out my premiums have gone up .............. I've lost me free no claim bonus n noone wants to give me home and contents insurance:mad:

The official score at the stage is well and truely

    Baddies 1 Lou Nill

HAving lost my good old VL to some *)&^(#@$^ who flogged n burnt her to a crisp the though of some *(&%&^(&^$) getting their Hands on my tools makes me wanna cry.

Although its always gonna be hard to 'square up' I've made a decision to make it as hard as I can for theives to get there grubby little hands on my goodies ever again.

SO............the first project is to secure the Shed. A challenge this will be indeed.

I've got 3 roller doors to secure of which one keeps running of the rollers n back yard entrance that looks like a door but is as about as secure as wet tissue paper.

Also theres a Window out the back...............always a challenge to secure. Anwayz this is a plea from writers of the code and all Shed owners to spill the beans on the Ducks Nuts of BAckyard SHed Security

Help me keep my sacred tools n machinery outta the grubby little Hands of those low life theives Any recommends on addressing the issues I have discussed n any suggestions about good alarm systems would be really really appreciated.

I know I can't turn my hallowed ground into Fort Knox But I wanna get close!!!!!!

    Regards Lou:eek:

    Hi Lou,

Get a big dog, preferably one of the bull breeds, Bullterrier, American Stafforshire terrier etc. Good with kids and don't have to be savage, the scare the living daylights out of most people. Let it live in your shed and it will get very protective of everything that's in there.

    Grizz.

Bars on the window for starters, even if they are removeable and can be secured with a padlock.
See a locksmith who have some wonderful weaponry when it comes to roller door locks, Rivers Locks are almost impregnable, and really not suitable for home use but there are some similar versions of these.
They comprise of a large freewheeling knob with a key hole in the middle, double sided 12 pin barrels with different combinations on each side, almost impossible to pick.
You would probably only need one and the other doors could be made secure from the inside locking this one as you leave.
Alarms are pretty easy to install and a trip to Jaycar will find some nice units, with battery backup so when the boguns turn off the power the alarm remains active.
Different types of sensors, we have a lot of wildlife (rats and mice) no PIR is not a good idea, using mechanical switches if this is the case, outside sensor light to let them know you are prepared, boguns don't like to be in full view whilst working their magic.
Pity we can't use man traps any more
Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

    Hey lou

Sorry to hear about the commodore mate <O
    <O
How close do you wanna make it?
For the roller doors the dodgy shed salesman I bought my shed off gave me a thing call a TMP roller door Security Disc. It’s a lock for roller doors that bolts to the ground basically. If you google it you’ll see what I mean.
    <O
As for an alarm system I would recommend either a Challenger from Tecom or a concept 1000 from inner range (both aussie). That’s what I would recommend if I was trying to sell you an alarm system. They are both pretty much the ducks nuts but also come with the price to match and need a technician to install and setup.
    <O
If you wanna do it yourself most electronic (dick smith etc) and electrical wholesaler will sell you most of what you need. I would use magnetic reed switches on all doors and windows. PIRs (passive infrared) are good but for a shed you will need a detector that uses microwave as well as because PIRS work by detecting changes in heat so a breeze can set them off, Microwaves work purely on motion.
    <O
The other thing I would highly recommend if your extra paranoid is alarm monitoring via a dial up connection even if you have it dial your mobile or a friend. Unless your neighbors watch your back and will actually check out what has caused the siren. But alarm monitoring also requires a licensed technician and the right system.
    <O
If you weren’t so far away Id offer to help you set up an alarm system. I’ve even got some second hand gear I could sell ya for cheap. But advice is alway free

oh, and the dog idea is good too

    regards Paul

Id be asking why the insurance companys wont give you H&C cover... Id take it further.

First securely bolt your machines down, block off any unused doors with a cabinet that is fastened in place to the doors frame, bar up the windows on the inside with curtains... if a theif see's bars they'll think yer locking up something of great value(like power tools).
With the remaining roller doors chat the landlord and ask if you can convert them to swinging/sliding doors as they can be made much more secure without spending big bucks on high security roller doors.

    Fantastic stuff fellas.............really appreciated

I spent the day wanding hardware shops aimlessly not sure what I was looking for and returned with 1/2 tonne heavy chain some 100ml dynabolts n a few other odds n ends.

I've decided to totally seal off one roller door & Ramset some eyebolts into the concrete floor to connect the heavy chain too BUT will also look at your excellent suggestions.

Any ideas on the best place to look for window bars??

"Id be asking why the insurance companys wont give you H&C cover... Id take it further"

................Yer I thought of that Harry but their response was that I'm too much of a risk for them with so many sheds being knocked over lately n the amount of quality tools I have.................

Don't worry there were a few 'heated' exchanges BUT no real answers SEEMS when you get robbed or have your car knocked off your considered more of a risk.................How this works out this way I have no Idea!!!

Not only am I a victum of crime but now the insurers are using it as an excuse to bleed more of my hard earn't coin from me ................for that little piece of mind good insurance offers:mad:

Don't overlook this... put a sensor light over each door window to ensure maximum coverage. Any door/window/lock can be gotten through, given enough time. Spotlighting the li'l buggers while they're at it deters all except the stupidest.

Wouldn't stop a "pro" of course, but they probably wouldn't go through a door or window anyway... why muck aboiut with locks when even a 5yo can get through most roofs?
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

A dog beats a lock every time.

    G'day New Lou,

If you're looking for serious security for your future car, then Id go the way off those who own XY GTOs and Harleys - a purpose built cage that your car sits in, that and a nasty dog that lives in your shed to guard it.

Not that I like the idea of a dog for that puepose though.

I've always liked the idea of rigging up some wiring that connects to the car or bike that is active and when the mongrel touches it - whamo! There was a security device in the US like this while ago, but I don't know if it ezeists anmymore.

(bugger a few beers + ans my fingers refurse to work anymore )

Dog... definantly absolutely dog... big ol rottweiler heck it doesnt even need to be old or particularily big just a rotty... you heard one of those mutts growl? IN A SHED?? talk about shyte kittens where the sun dont shine!!

So first order of business... go get a nice wee 1 or 2 year old rotty and make it a nice kennel in the corner of the shed put rotty in shed make the shed her home her domain and yours only allow close freinds and family in there and ONLY when your there... end of anyone coming in the shed!

Windows? Im still tossing up weather or not to put a window in my shed... one side of me wants one for the light and air so I can work with the roller doors down instead of open all the time... the other side says NO FLAMIN WAY!... but since youve got windows get some reo bar and make some seriass bars from the top beam of the shed down to the bottom all across the face of the window then do it the other way accross the window so you end up with a window of steel!!! gaps of 4in should do the trick weld it to the damned frame of the shed... then put the curtains between them and the window itself

Okay roller doors.... I have those shyte cheepo rollerdoors on this shed of mine so I guess if I were you Id go for the GOOD doors in this instance pay more for them usually gets good quality... now once installed make up some pegs with the left over reo drill a hole each side of the door width to say 4in deep weld a couple of plates of steel to the door itself down low so it wont interfere with the roller door action but still strong enough to hold the reo bar in place

Next... get some electric fencing stuff and wrap the shed in electric fencing dont put the bloody warning signs up!! arc it up whenever your not in there

Next... place those bloody great 100,000,000 watt spotlights used at the sporting venues or mine sites on all four corners of the shed... shining down... attach them to a sensor thingy

Next... put in some seriass mega decibels alarms about 10 should do then connect them to a keyed lock thingy so that it can only be disarmed by someone with THE KEY... this would be hooked up to go off if the electric fence goes zzzzzzzzap! and firestorm spots go on

This would effectively make ingress to the shed almost bloody impossible... first they gotta get through the ruddy powered up fence without turnin the eyeball searing eardrum destroying spots and alarm going off... THEN.. they gotta get the damned door or window open THEN they gotta get past the bloody reo...all the time with that searing burning sensation where their eyeballs once were and the bloodletting earholes they used to hear other things but the BLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTT from... THEN just when they think theyve done it... out of the dark comes the deepest meanest nastiest blood thirsty sounding growl that mongrels ever heard!!!... if that doesnt do it cause hes deaf and blind the damned set of choppers tearin through flesh will... Hes gone!!

But! IF he does carry a nice big t bone in his back pocket to tempt said dog he would still have to get the gear out... and a t bone will only keep a rotty busy for all of about 2 seconds flat... then its back to business! "thanks for the snack mate but you wanna tell me why I shouldnt make you my main meal eh?"

Course if he does manage to get in through all that and get the tools out and gone with all his limbs intact then mate... Id say let him have them cause its bloody obvious that he needs them real bad!

It will also make it easy for the cops to find him... just ask all the docs to report any sod hunched over blind and deaf with great tears in his flesh that will be the boy

Of course the insurance companies will still hate you as ever but what the hell at least you will retain your tools!

So there you go just a few hints and tips!
Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!

Ouch:eek: Dont do that Louie `cause if the idiot robber chops his finger off you will be the one who will be sued.

The sensor light on the roof is a good idea, but take the globes out and instead hook it up to a stereo just inside the garage door and have "ride of the valkyries" come blarin out at full blast. Now that will scare the s#### out of em
