    Post Seeking Advice

    Hi Everyone,

I have been given this little project at work of fixing up these display items. There are 13 broken one's that need to be lovingly repaired to look something like they were before. Being a toolmaker by trade I'm not used to working with wood, the last (& only) thing I made in wood was a toast rack at school and that is 30+ years ago:eek:. So I need some advice off you excellent woodworkers here @ the forum.

The images provided is of a broken one and a good one. The damaged one's are all split in the middle - must have been constructed in two pieces that were glued together then machined (or formed) as required. They were damaged as the result of the floor they were located on getting flooded. Can you please tell me which is the best glue to use to put them back together and how would I recolour them?. I don't know if they have been stained or as someone thought at Bunnings was that the colour of the wood was drawn out by beeswax:confused:. I hope to stick them together then remachine them on my metalworking lathe at work.

All help and ideas would be very much appreciated. I can load up more images if required.

    Cheers

The important thing is to get the faces perfectly flat before you glue them. I'd suggest using double sided tape to stick some 240 or 280 paper down on a piece of MDF or similar and sand them flat on that. If that's done properly, most good glues will do the job. Personally I'd probably use epoxy to avoid creep, but AV180 or other good glues should work.

Thanks for the reply and advice Alex much appreciated. in regards to the finish would i be best to sand away the surface coating and stain it?. Or because it appears to be a dark wood, would I then just varnish it?. sorry for all the questions but I like having a go at things like this.
