Thread: Seeking a good turn from a local member with a lathe!

If you don't get any offers, something simple like that could be done in the drill press. Think of it as a vertical lathe. For a tool rest, mount a bolt onto the table, you could use an ordinary chisel to do the grooves. Practice on some blanks first, to get the hang of it.

Hi Kryn, this crossed my mind actually but I was uncertain about it - i figured if I tried it with any of my tools it would just dig in and gouge.

What tool would I use to cut the slot?

Do I get a narrow kind of chisel with a particular end or something?

Are you particularly attached to those wheels?

Spinning them on a lathe is rather risky, now that you've cut out the central fretwork. Particularly with cutting into ply "end-grain." It would've been better to have the disks rounded and turned, then cut out the spokes.

How were you planning on rounding them before you though of turning? Mounting on an axle in a jig and then using a linisher? The same sort of jig should work reasonably well with a router... taking several passes that only remove a mm or two of depth each pass.

Personally I'd probably temporarily attach another layer of thick ply on the top face, just to keep my fingers that much further away from the router bit if I felt - for some odd reason - that I needed to hold the piece close to the router bit.

FWIW, if you still want them turned and can't find anyone closer than Oberon, I'll happily spin them up for you. Under the caveat that there's no guarantee you'll get anything more than splinters back.

I accept I’ve got the order wrong on this one.

I have various options when it comes to jigs I use for turning the wheels against the linisher disc.

I should spend some time perfecting these so I can adapt to the router.

This is one tool I have tremendous respect for but not enough experience to have begun to develop confidence.

It would be a trivial excercise to cut the groove on a saw bench vertically.

Thanks to John, AussiePens who pointed me in the right direction, lent me some slot cutters and instructed me on how to set up my router with a zero tolerance fence.

This has been a great learning exercise and gone some way to building confidence with my hitachi and the Triton router table.



Results were perfect - depth width and bang on the centre line - no damage or safety concerns. Just great.
