semi-rant - timber and removalists
"Nah mate, that's building materials and we won't take it" says the removalist bloke.
"I'm paying for the removal, and its timber, its my stash of good stuff and its not building material." says I. and a few cartons will do this one.
"Nah mate, that's building materials and we won't take it, and your workbench is building material too" says the removalist bloke.
"No worries, maaaate, I'll take it in the trailer" says I, knowing I'm beat.
It is NOT building materials, its my bloody timber stash of beautiful timber.
I reckon they should take it and now I've got to load the trailer and tow it all to the short term rental, then to the new house whenever we get one, while our other stuff (including tools) is in storage.
And NO.... I won't give it away to one of you Sydney based lot.
Removalists. <insert sigh smilie> when I take over the world, they'll be made to take the timber.
Semi-rant over

I think you should have got another removalist.
When I moved from Sydney to the fabulous Central Coast just over 12 months ago they brought all the tools including the tablesaw , lathe bandsaw and all the bits and pieces of timber etc.etc.etc. - there were quite a lot of etc.s.____________________________________________________________

Clint, I would have had them include it the quote. eg, when you rang, contents of house and workshop including cabinet timbers and tools.
I have no room for more timber, so you cant store it here.
Unless it is 150mm thick Black Walnut about 400 round . . . then I can find roomPat

You might have just been unlucky. I had no trouble when moving to SA from Vic ..... they even packed up the garage and the timber. I don't think they were super keen on moving the timber, or packing the garage for that matter, but it all arrived safe and sound.

About time you bought a house and one with a shed.
In terms of your bench you should have said it was an art piece and it needs to be treated special.

Thank you for the WARNING to ENSURE THE REMOVALIST QUOTE "INCLUDES ALL THE TIMBER & WORKSHOP STASH"

When I moved from Darwin to Melbourne just over 4 years ago, I had my triton workcentre, 14" bandsaw, drill press, lathe and belt and disk sander in the carport and was in the process of dismantling them to put in my trailer with my timber stash.
Removalist comes up and asks "Can we put this lot on first before we start in the house?"
"No worries Mate, do I need to pull them apart?"
"They look good to go to me." he replied.
SO I towed my 7x4 enclosed box trailer to Melbourne with a compressor and a lawnmower in it. They had oil in them so the removalist , quite rightly declined to take them.
I guess it depends on the removalist. Work was paying for the removalist and my fuel and accomodation for the trip, so it didnt really matter to me but it saved a lot of work disassembling and reassembling.
Cheers

Same problem over here - get it included in the quote.
One move the guys queried some big lumps of seasoned apple until I told him it was worth more per lb than he was.
Last movers were great, winced a bit at the milling machine but loaded the lot - machines, timber, metal stock & 150 boxes. (2 removal vans for my stuff, 1 for the house & contents)
Not moving again - next time I leave will be in a box of my own.....
MarkWhat you say & what people hear are not always the same thing.

Yes, dud removalists are common. Ours didnt object to anything, and even took things we had agreed to leave in Tasmania. But, then quite a lot of stuff didn't arrive here anyway. When you have 110 cubic metres of stuff you just cannot keep track of it especially with two young children to care for too. Lost books, Aust cedar, plant pots and even a small table. I'm glad that I never intend to move again!

Thanks all for the replies, comments and advice.
Before I stuffed my back I moved house myself... it is why I have long arms. (that and pushing wheelbarrows of concrete )
15 moves in 20 years (and more before that) and 2 to go before my cunning plan to never shift again comes to fruition (x-fingers).
I'm moving to the central NSW coast and am going to buy a house with a shed and then a farm, with a bigger shed, and they can bury me in the hole I'll dig with the tractor on the farm.
I'll be growing a beard, grass and cows - and 'doing more with less budget', writing policy and fighting to remain calm in peak hour traffic can be damned.
Cranky removalist's can not get my ginger up at this point in life.

oh, forgot to mention.... a mate lives in the new place I'm going to and he has a thicknesser, jointer, big bandsaw, linisher and spindle moulder... which I don't have and he will trade use of the machines for 'going fishing and drinking beer together and using my hand tools'.
Perfection!

Christos - not going off grid, but when I get the farm there will be so many solar panels connected to the grid that I'll be a net supplier and not a net user.
Cow poo will go into a methane recovery system as well to generate night time power.
