Services needed - Thicknesser 500mm wide - Brisbane Area
Hi All,
Not sure if this is the right forum (there are so many!) or whether this should go in the WTB section, but I need the services of someone (preferrably around the greater Brissie area) who has a thicknesser that can handle a couple of Tallow slabs 500mm wide (at the widest point) by approx 2m long. These things are freaking heavy too. So might need a lift getting them off the roof racks!
They are currently 55mm thick and I want to get them down to approx 40mm.
In return I can offer to help clean up the massive pile of mess your machine will make , plus a couple of six packs of your favourite beer or a nice bottle of red for your troubles.
Anyone able to help me or point me to someone who can? I live in The Gap, and can drive to you wherever that may be. Can maybe drop in on the way home from the southside of Brissie. Otherwise weekends preferred. If you like the old fashioned way of communicating, I can be reached on 0402 601 787 any time.
Cheers,
-Scott

500 mm thicknesser
Hi Shines,
Are the slabs flat enough and straight enough to be put through a thicknesser or do they need to go through a slab flattening machine first.... with our Tassie timber this is almost always the case as we usually get some wind and cup and often bow as well with drying however much you weigh the stack to keep everything flat.
Good luck .....most commercial joineres have a 600mm thicknesser or if not they certainly would know who has. Try to find a location that has a 600mm thicknesser AND a wide belt sander to save yourself a lot of drudgery on the sanding.
Cheers Old Pete

Hi Old Pete,
These appear to be as close to dead flat as possible. Quite surprising really, since they are so long.
I dont mind the drugery of sanding them, as any time in the workshop is enjoyable. Also, its not critical that they are perfectly flat. These are going to be the shelves in a one of a kind book case, so there will be a fair bit of work done to them before I get near sanding them.
I am kind of winging it at this stage! Will post WIP photos as I get started. But first things first, I need to get these babies to a more workable thickness.
Cheers,
-Scott

If all else fails try Wood N You - Board Timber Hire - You do it!
The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".
