Where to get shaper cutters from for Jet jws18ho shaper
Hi all, I have just obtained a Jet Shaper jws 18 ho for my wood shop. Didn't come with any bits/cutters. I want to buy a set of basic standard type cutters(if there is such a thing) Like 10 most common. I also want to make tongue and groove floorboards. Building my own timber home over next 2 years.Didn't even know what a shaper did till after I made an offer. Now I am excited about using it. but before I do, is there a place that sells this gear in oz/online. Looking for decent quality, doesn't have to be the cheapest option (cheapest in long term is most expensive usually),. As most of you guys know your stuff and have been through the process, can you let me know where you get your gear from. Thanks in advance

Hi, I notice you haven't had any responses to your thread and as I don't have a shaper, can only suggest you google for suppliers; good luck.

Hi,
Have you tried Carbatec? They have CMT cutterheads and different profile cutter inserts.
Cheers

This concerns me. The shaper is often considered one of the most dangerous machines you can own. I highly recommend you invest in some featherboards so that you can apply pressure to the timber where it's needed while keeping your hands out of the way and watch as many instructional videos as you can.
The one you've bought is only 1hp (less power than most routers) so don't go buying large cutters; it won't be able to run them. Unfortunately I haven't got a clue where to look for cutters you can use, I'm used to working with industrial size machines, and I'm pretty sure everything Carbatec has will be too big. What size is the shaft?

I have one of these that I only use router bits in ,I dont use the large shaping bits in it preferring to use the shaping function on my Combination machine for the shaping cutters. It's routing facility allows for the 1/2"as well as 1/4" collets for those sized router bits.
I hope that you have a manual for this because it can be dangerous to the uninitiated,no offence mean't, it has a 2 way directional (forward reverse ) switch that allows the machine to be used in a climb cut situation and should always be checked when using moreover if you are not familiar with the climb cut.
There are a number of toolshops that provide good cutters/router bits, Carbitool,or Carbs-tec just to name a couple & used with featherboards as has been suggested is always a good idea for safety.

Thanks alot for the advise. I didn't intend on using it without having a wood machinist mate come over and give me the drum. I was hoping to get some bits so when he gets out to my place we have something to work (play) with. I am starting to get the feeling this machine will struggle making tongue and groove in 20mm black wattle flooring.

It'll do it, but it'll be a slow process - especially without a power feeder.
