    Default Sharpening larger hollow chisels

    Hi,

I've trolled around the net and forums looking for information on how to sharpen mortice machine hollow chisels. Seems like there are a few options for chisels up to 1/2 inch, but can't find anything for 5/8 inch.

In Oz I can find the countersink style sharpeners from Carbatec and McJing, but once again only up to 1/2 inch. I cannot find the diamond cones like Lee Valley, Rockler, or Axminster advertise from a local supplier.

Are there other options for me to look at? Does a hardwood cone and lapping compound really work and what's the technique?

    Cheers, Jeff.

If anyone's interested I took delivery of a sharpener from McJing and it seems to work quite well on my set of 5 chisels from Hare & Forbes. Several turns and then hone the outside faces. In a few minutes I had a 3/8 inch bit cutting clean square holes in blue gum and pine with no problems.

I still can't see how to sharpen chisels larger that 1/2 inch though.

    Hi J.lo,
Interesting to know the Mcjing tool works well ut to 1/2 inch . I may have to give one a go one day.
I have fiddled with sharpening my chisels with a die grinder with a small stone , and sandpaper on sticks .
In general though I find I don't need to sharpen them though because at times I find the auger is the thing that packs up and breaks, and every time that happens I have another spare chisel. I mainly use the 3/8 and 1/2 inch. I was using larger a few years back with large mortises for Trestle Tables.
But sometimes when Im needing a 45mm wide mortise for one of these tables I still may just use the 1/2 inch around the outside of the mortise

Back to sharpening the larger ones . I think I have seen older unused or used ? sharpening thingys on ebay , possibly UK ebay I think ?

    Hi Jeff,
I have the set that covers all sizes. I bought it from either Carbatec or Timbecon a few years ago. It seems they don't stock them any more. I find this strange as they sell the chisel sets that include a 3/4". I have read in posts on this and other forums that the Diamond Cones from Lee Valley are very good. Only thing is you have to be a little bit careful as they do not have a pilot like the steel ones. Hope that helps.
    Regards,
    Ross
