sharpening plane blades made easy
bought this knife sharpener, because I thought it would make a good planer blade sharpener ,It did, comes with 5 wetstones from 80 to 1500 which clamp on to the handle, only mod was to drill 1 extra hole to hold the blade and 2'' of foam tape so it wont slip, gives an even accurate angle edge and sharp as,as well as being simple to use ....................bob

Even if the jig ground flat and straight (which I doubt - I have one of these for knives), are you happy with 1500 grit. I start my sharping at 1000 grit and generally finish at 13000 (waterstone) or 20000 (green compound).
There are less complicated systems out there.

for the limited use I get out of a plane I,m quite happy with 1500 grit ,and as far as I,m concerned it seems flat enough to get a reasonable cut and I can shave with it so it cant be that bad

Where did you get it and how much ? Considering it for knives...

$28 ebay, only a cheapie, bought it just to see if I vould adapt it for plane blades, have removed blue tape and put one sided adhesive foam so the knives stay in place, when you see the photos you will see what I mean,my son bought a professional one for $350 but its absolutely fantastic and comes with multiple (10) quality stones

Ruixin brand on Aliexpress. I bought the stainless steel version and modified it like this. Just throw Ruixin into you tube & there are a wealth of videos.
However; I wouldn't touch any of my plane irons with it. No matter how carefully you try it is impossible to maintain a flat curve; in other words you are going to put a camber on the irons; or worse a concavity if you spend too long in the middle! This will be practically unnoticeable on the first hone of a flat sharpened iron but if this becomes your primary sharpening and honing method it will get progressively worse.
My demo sharpening system is a $15 "Eclipse" style Chinese knock-off used on a $30 400/1000 grit diamond stone (also Chinese); I show people that for less than $50 you can a system that works straight out the box for chisels and plane irons that will pop hairs off your arm. It won't take translucently thin shavings but can be used as the first step getting there; add a lump of buffing compound scribbled on a piece of thick MDF and the edge improves more.
My workshop system is a Veritas MkII used on diamond plates for the primary bevel; then microfilm for the teeny-weeny secondary bevel and finished by stropping on leather with chromium oxide; still in the jig.Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

Bob, it all comes down to experience and exposure. Do yourself a favour and compare the results you are getting to that of a cheap Eclipse-copy honing guide and wet-and-dry sandpaper at 2500 grit. Or even 1500 grit and finish on green compound (from Carbatec) rubbed on planed hardwood. That is about the cheapest high quality system one could use.
Compare the blades on pine end grain. I am positive that the results will be night and day. The reason that I have replied here is that I would not wish a newbie to read your recommendation and spend money on it. It would be a total waste (as you will discover in time - sorry).
