    Default Sharpening Ramset R3 Drills

    Hi,

I recently purchased 2 M16x300 R3 Masonry bits. When I looked at the tip they are indeed strange looking animals.

Does anyone know if you can sharpen these? My enquiries to Ramset is that they are not economical to sharpen - but they would say that.

I have a lot of holes to drill (starter bars for concete walls) and I would like to try sharpening these. I think I could sharpen them back to a standard masonry bit at worst.

    Many thanks

I don't have any Ramset bits.
I'm not sure I even know what one looks like

However, in the past I've had success sharpening masonary bits with a diamond file or stone

it's at least worth a try

    Hi DVD

Being an old Ramset Rep and owning several Ramset drill bits I can assure you they can be sharpened but first of all they are designed to be used in a Rotary Hammer Drilling machine.

To sharpen them you require them to be sharpened on a Silicone Carbide stone (Green Stone) and you just follow the profile that is on the drill bit.

That is a double sided chisel type profile and it needs to have a sharp edge but it is surprising how they will drill even when they are blunt.

When drilling with a Rotary Hammer Drill you don't need any heavy pressure on the drill as this tends to dampen the hammer action and they don't drill as well just light pressure and let the drill do the work.

What Barry says and you should be able to get a few hundred holes or more before it needs sharpening if at all
    Cheers
