Shipping wood products overseas?
Hi all!
Bear with me here...*takes deep breath*
I have been having the darndest time trying to find a straightforward answer to the issue of shipping wood overseas and I figured if anyone will know, it will be someone on this forum!!
Here is the deal...I am a mixed media artist who uses imported artist's canvases to make some of my work with. I buy the canvases (which are usually imported from other countries such as China). These are your standard, typical canvases from art supply shops and the like. I strip them of the canvas fabric and repurpose the wooden frames for my work.
I am in the process of setting up an online shop to sell my stuff and am trying to figure out the shipping aspect of things. I wanted to be sure it is safe to ship the pieces made of the stretcher frames overseas.
I haven't really been given a straightforward answer, and I have spoken to customs, Oz quarantine, and Australia Post. I have more questions than answers at this point. I could understand if I was using wood that I chopped down from my backyard, but we're talking about wood that has been imported commercially already.
I just can't believe this would be such an ordeal, and I'm pretty stressed about it. I would so appreciate any advice you guys might have! I am so desperate at this point..*starts to unbutton top*....LOL.!

I think you will find it depends on the destianation. Wood coming to Australia generally has to be fumigated, even if its only the pallets inside a container.
I would imaging some countries are harder than others and Australia would probably be among the hardest.
Have you spoke to a freight forwarder?

I was hoping that small craft wooden items that have already been made for mass-consumption wouldn't be a problem, as I'd imagine they would have already been fumigated prior to entry into Australia in the first place.
What exactly is a freight forwarder? I am not looking to send out huge quantities at a time, these are just small artworks I make that utilize the wooden frame for a bit of structure.
Thank you *so* much for your help

Just go ahead and send them. There are no quarantine inspections going out of australia and only Canada and NZ even look at wood that is shipped from australia and they nearly always let manufactured products through. What they are trying to stop is someone picking up a wormy old stick in the bush and taking it home as a souvenir and maybe introducing some new bug to their forest industry. We've sent and taken australian wood products to USA, Canada. UK, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and New Zealand and about a dozen other places. New Zealand was the only place that even looked at what we had.

exporting timber
I have tried to send Paulownia to a few countries without success. Recently Ii sent some to Singapore by post. The local post office consulted a manual and declared that it was OK to accept a parcel containing timber going to Singapore. For larger quantities there are more problems than you could believe and I have given up.

I have sent several wooden mirror frames overseas without issue.
.
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.
Regards, Woodwould.

This bit of info may help you, ( with a bit of luck ),- Google, - International Freight--forwarding Companies/Australia. One of the major Companies is, Stockwell International who have an extensive Import - Export Information Book available online,- and yes it is downloadable,- there's about Two Dozen pages to read. I got a copy just in case someone asked me about exporting my Toy Plans offshore,- fortunately Toy Plans being on paper, and in a standard size large envelope are passed OK for export to individual buyers, although I have received enquiries from Chinese buyers,- but they don't get as they cry, "poverty," and want everything for almost nothing,- so that's what they get," Nothing. "

exporting timber
Roger
Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I'm not smart enough to find it on the Stockwell International web site. I did look at the useful tools but as none was called an information booklet I didn't open any of them. Can you steer me in the right direction as I would really like to know more about the world of exporting parcels of timber.
