shooting board
Ive just been reading the Workbench thread and the posts about Shooting Boards have inspired this.
I have seen then mentioned in various books (I dont actually know anyone into wood so read lots) Ive never understood how they work.
It seems as though you would be planing the shooting board at the same time. I must have it wrong.
Please explain.

The side of the plane runs in a shallow rebate, the rebate depth is equal to the distance between the side of the plane and the edge of the blade.

You've got it right, almost. The first time you use the board you will take a shaving off it, but because the plane doesn't cut across its entire width you will end up with a small strip that doesn't get cut and that small strip is what guides the plane straight when jointing your boards. Make a rough one up out of scrap and you'll soon get the idea.

A picture tells a thousand words, which saves a lot of two finger typing.
