Shop Made Tapering Jig Ideas?
Hi all chippies
I'm part way through a cabinet project that calls for a short (15 cm) taper on the bottom of the legs (from 45mm down to 20mm)
I am proposing to make a tapering jig for the purpose, and trying to find a good design. I've copied an article from Fine Woodworking - Nov/Dec 2007 that shows what looks like an OK unit. I have also seen the Carba-tec tapering jig, as another design approach. But, I haven't yet had the need to use a tapering jig, so I'm not sure what to look for or what makes a good one, or whether there are any tricks to making them work well.
I guess this is not the most high-tech piece of gear, but if anyone has any handy tips, I'd be grateful for your advice, tips or pics.
Thanks for your help - Cheers

Hey Garry,
I've used my jointer to taper legs on a hall table before. Just set a stop and away you go. I can post a pic if you like?

I picked up some cheap hold down clamps and made the one in the attached pic, no plans just some scrap.
Base is 12mm MDF and the angle attachment is 16mm mdf.
I wanted something wider to keep my hands further away from the saw blade. The basic jigs that carbatec etc sell place your hands too close to the saw blade for my liking.
In the end I found this jig works equally as well on the bandsaw, which I prefer to use for cutting tapers.

The only time I tapered a leg (well 6 actually, 4 real legs and 2 practice) I started to fabricate an adjustable taper jig. Then I thought it would be much simpler to if I settled on a fixed angle as it would probably be a one-off. And so far it has been.
I ended up with a similar jig to joez. Scrap MDF base and radiata angle-set. Fixed with suitable screws and clamped to table saw. I had to set the saw blade higher than the cut would normally need to reduce the effect of the blade radius on the shallow end of he tapered cut. Band saw would have been better and safer.

Thanks Guys for your help
Andy - oh that I had a jointer - and the space to put one!! That's one piece of kit I've had to struggle on without but it sure would make tapers a snap.
Joez - yours looks very similar to the design I got from Fine Woodworking - its looking a bit like its the universal design - so I guess that makes yours 'state of the art'!
You Tube seems to have several entries that I can review as well.
I'm off to do some jigging
Thanks again all

HI Gary I have made a couple of taper jigs over the years but I was always a bit concerned about my hands being a bit too close to the blade. There were a couple of videos on the forum about table saw safety and kick back which showed me that what I was doing was NOT A GOOD thing
Just after this Carbatec had a special on the one mentioned,I bought it,good thing. As well as tapers I used it to cut straight some bowed stock.
You can make one like the Carbatec unit but after buying the track, scales, hold downs etc. I thought it was reasonable value and straight out of the box to use (well almost)
