    Default Shower Bench

I am looking at building a shower bench and needed some advise on wood and finishing. I have seen a lot built with Teak, but I am in Guatemala, C.A. and cannot get Teak ha ha. But I have also read a lot of reviews stating that teak wears out and they end up replacing with cedar!

At any rate I have two choices and wanted some thoughts on the idea, which would last longer and how to seal it if need be.

I can either get Cedar or Cypress. I have heard that Cypress would be better for wet projects and outdoor because of it's water shedding abilities?

Now once that's out of the way, do I seal it or just leave it open wood with no stain? Any thoughts?

Thanks for any advise you can give me.

Either wood will be ok. Both have good 'wet' abilities. I would finish it with several coats of polyurethane or a marine varnish. If left unfinished the constant wetting and drying cycle could cause problems.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Also you should think about the design so the possibility of water pooling on flat surfaces is reduce maybe something like rounded surface.

All finishes are problematic. We have a wooden framed window in our shower that we had a lot of trouble with until I painted it with 7 coats of epoxy two pack so it built up a thick coating. It has lasted for 9 years and is still ok.
