    Default Silver Ash?

    Hi
I'm building a kayak and looking for a suitable wood for the cockpit coaming and to finish the very stem and stern of the boat. The American books and web sites talk about 'Ash' because it bends well as resists knocks.

Is there a local wood that would serve well? I had an idea that Qld Silver Ash may also be reasonably tough and bendy.
    Cheers
    Peter

Don't know about Silver Ash, but some air dried Huon pine will last you forever. Bends great (not if kiln dried), all but imune to all forms of rot, investation, salt water---- the miracle timber.

    Silver Ash!!!!!............hmmmmm, my favourite timber!!

    I've used M³'s of it.

Silver Ash is an excellent steam bent timber, I can see your kayak with lots of class & style by using Silver Ash!

    Default Sliver Ash

    Peter,

    SNAP

I'm also building a cedar strip kayak and am looking for ash for the cockpit rim. Have you managed to find a supplier in Sydney - and how are you cutting the veneers (yourself or getting the supplier to do it)?

    Thanks

    Grant.

p.s. what are you building - mine is a Guillemot - using Nick Schade's book.

Try Richard Parsons at Canalpie Timbers at North Richmond- 02 4571 1570. He may still have some.

Malcolm at BoutiqueTimbers at Rollands Plains has plenty of Northern Silver Ash.
He will be delivering to customers in Sydney around first week May. Call him on 0265 858296 regarding price and supply if you want timber.

I used silver ash as a gunwhale trim to contrast cedar ply in a number of my earlier boats, but in anything other than very thin strips, it is a coot to bend without steam and at the time it was hard to get knot free. As a substitute, I found that ramin was easier to work, and looked pretty good. Under marine varnish it tends to yellow slightly with age but it's not unattractive and quite a bit cheaper.

Haven't found supplier yet, although good leads above. Thanks Alex, Greg and Graeme.

Building a 'Squeedunk Cormorant' stitch and glue hull with a stripped deck.

The Cormorant is from offsets from the Squeedunk web site. I'm making the deck up as I go along.

Good luck with the Guilemot. I'd love to see it when it's done. Maybe you could let me know where you're paddling some time and I could come and have a look.

    Cheers

When I want a particular species for a job, I can usually source it from Trend Timbers at Mulgrave (near Richmond). It's amazing how many different timbers they have. Nice blokes, too.

    Both Trend & Mathews have it - Mathews probably a bit cheaper. $3330/cubic metre = 1200 x 100 x 25 for $10.

Mathews address 16 Christie St. St Marys 9833 3100

    Default Silver dash

Be wary of stuff that has not been dried properly.
    Silver ash blue stains badly.
I bought enough 65mm thick boards to construct my workbench for peanuts.
Peter Adams was just starting off in Mittagong and I guess he got sold a dud sling.
Being an honest merchant he heavily discounted it and I still have the bench in use 30 years later.
Does steam bend well as does Huon.

Matthews timber usually stocks American white ash as well. In my opinion, much better for the job then silver ash.
    Apologies for unnoticed autocomplete errors.
