Default The simple beauty of timber

After I had glued up my second bench top half today, I had about twenty minutes before my kids got home from school, so decided to kill some time before we would all stop for afternoon tea.

Simple wood spirals from a narrow piece of pine I found in the kindeling bucket, and a chisel. I was mesmerised.

    Simple elegance

Just look at the wood structure

    How I made them

Oh, and a word to the wise, after the photo of me making a spiral, I had to sharpen out a great big nick from the cutting edge. I'll give you one guess what happened. Hint: nothing but the wood is holding the chisel in that photo.

The chisel fell to the floor, and it's not a wooden floor is it.

Bingo. I took the photo, and thought, I should move the chisel quickly, but didn't and it fell on the concrete floor. I was standing there too, and did one of those two foot simultaneous hop/shuffle backwards moves. In hindsight, I was wearing jeans and steel caps so wouldn't have got hurt, and probably had more chance of injuring myself with that funky move. I note BobL posted something in the last couple of days about the dangers of walking backwards; I was well beyong that at that moment!

    Kind regards,

Better late than never, and assuming your setup permits, as much as everyone tries not to accidentally drop a chisel or tool, sometimes it happens. For these rare circumstances I have a perimeter of interlocking rubber gym type square mats that are around my work area. Much nicer to stand on for long periods of time and saves your chisel edge in those rare cases of them falling off the bench or slipping while taking great photos.
