    Question Singer Sewing machines

Ok, anyone got any info on what type of timber was used to veneer the tops of the old treadle style singer sewing machine tables? You know the ones with the cast iron bases.

I have reveneered many in my time and they have always been an oak veneer, but the one I am currently doing is different. It actually resembles a dark teak or light Jarrah in grain and colour. Just as well I didn't order the oak veneer before seeing the tops!

    Anyone care to enlighten me??

    Cheers

Shane - We have one that I reckon is Myrtle-Beech. It has been coloured with what looks like a cross between black walnut and rosewood. It is from that era where almost everything was Myrtle-Beech and stained walnut or rosewood.

Could also be cherry my uncle who worked for them for years said that he thinks both were used. However he is getting on a bit and never really had anything to do with timber.

    Hope this helps.

    Lightbulb

Thanks Neil. I scanned a pic of a section of the top that I sanded back to bare and rubbed with some of your wax to show the natural colour... Have a look and let me know what you think, as I am stumped...

    Thumbs up

    Thanks Neil,

Looks like your right. After consulting some yanks I have been advised that it is definitly American Walnut. Or Black Walnut.
So I have some on order and have all fingers crossed its what I need! Damn the tops are in a mess, I reakon they have been submerged at some stage, close to needing replacing really, but will see what I can do!

Cheers. Will let you know how I progress...

Drop it into a tub of kerosene. Let it soak 24 hours.
Remove it and gently start working it, they're pretty simple and usually free right up.

you mean you don't have projects that wait 3 years to get started Shane? I'm sure I've got a few which have been waiting longer than that

I've restored maybe a dozen or so treadle sewing machines over the years. Most are Oak veneer, one walnut veneer, one maple veneer. Most of the big names limited variations while smaller companies seemed more willing to do something a little different. If it makes any difference, they may have switched heads in the case (didn't come with it originally). No big deal, just interesting.
