In the midst of making a couple of boxes, and a charity auction cutting board, I had a few minutes spare to tidy up the shed. I found a number of laminated timber bench top off cuts that I should be using. So I wondered what thickness chopping block I could make from it all, not that I didn’t have enough on my plate already. And I had recently been watching MTM wood’s YouTube videos (again) and decided on the Union Jack flag, as I had 3 different coloured Timbers. But after slicing and dicing I decided that this would be a in-between project and I could only do a bit at a time due to workshop accessibility.

bad move. If any of you are familiar with this you tubers method for this particular project it actually does required a several-stage glue up, but I don’t think weeks in between each stage was allowed for.

anyway, I got the 4 diagonal quadrants glued up, then one at a time flatten and start flying again.

i flush sanded the block, then added a stringer, then added the end stringer, but Lo and behold a few days later and boom, the 1 side glue up strikes again. The pictures don’t show it very well but you may be able to pick up on where things have bowed.

This is all 32mm thick timber at 40mm depth end grain. Bugger!!
