Skil drill
I have just seen a skil 14.4v cordless drill for sale $69.95 (RRP$139.95). There is plenty of info on cordless drills in the archives, but nothing on this brand or its quality. Is this a good deal or a waste of money?
I tried http://www.onlinetoolreviews.com and it was not reviewed there.
My second question was if anyone knows about the warranties of www.skil.com. The website does not list Australia in its distribution list and the purchase card is addressed to Denver U.S.A. The packaging says 2 year guarantee, but I thought a warranty was different.wine and wood

I would say that they may target the lower to bottom end of the market, I think they might be built in Mexico, not sure though. Some of their products might be OK, I have a skill c/saw made in US, which has been good. There are so many c/drills around and I would categerise them first, and then select the best from the group, taking into account service and warranty, weight, 1/2 or 3/8" chuck, battery amp hours ect.
I will say that corded drills are also very good, especially in the $$, as if you are working in a shed or have access to power they are great, really you need a corded drill anyway as in heavy use times they are the only way to go.

I have one. Used it to screw down 500 lm of Merbau and it did the job well. Came with two batteries which get through quite a bit of work before needing recharging.
Drill bits and screw bits that come with it are absolute rubbish.
Bought the Skil after lunching a Ryobi Cordless early in the job. $70 sounds all right if it comes with the two batteries and the carry case.
Skil circular saws have a reputation (especially in the US) as providing good value for money.

Skil were the first to make hand held circular saws & have a very good reputation in that field.
All circular saws in UK are referred to generically as Skilsaws regardless of make.
They are still excellant tools but not all Skil tools are as good as the saws as some are copied from other tools the same as with most other manufacturers.Dewy

Bosch owns Skil
From a knowledgable person I know.
He tells me that Bosch now own the Skil brand and the products are produced in the Bosch factories. The primary difference between the actual Bosch brand and Skil, is that the bearings are not of quite the same standard and the case are slightly inferior.
In the case of the circular saws, the Bosch has 2 bearings while the Skil only has one.
Overall for "non-heavy" use they are well worth considering.Last edited by Ruffy; 22nd February 2004 at 10:05 AM.
Ruffy - There are only 10 types of people who understand binary, those that do and those that don't.
