Pegs
G'day all
Can anyone advise on a type of wood that I could use to make small pegs for joinery. I don't mean dowel like you can buy usually made from Hoop Pine, Radiata, Vic Ash etc,I mean something akin to the pegs you would find on a neck of a string instrument, only I want the pegs to handle sheer force rather than tensioned force if you know what I mean. They are intended to be both functional in a joining method and decorative. Curently I've been using Coastal Tea Tree which I find as driftwood on the beach but I am concerned that over time this may not be the best material to use. I would prefer a native Australian wood.Harry

G'day Harry - I have a walking stick made from tea tree about 20 years ago it was in a fence for 30 odd years before that. It is as tough as old boot leather and almost impossible to damage. Bloody great stuff.
Maybe you could look at some of the box and iron bark species. They are pretty tough but have highly figured grain so you get super strength comgined with good looks (bit like me).
Hehehehehehehe
You should probably void the oily timbers.
Cheers - Neil

You know sometimes when you try and ask a serious question about something your heavly into and someone (Neil) has to go and spoil it by having a sense of humour, how was I to expect in reply a cartoon of some blow-up doll with a ridiculous looking head on it?
Seriously though, thanks for the advise Neil, I know it was a strange question but my faith in this BB made me ask anyhow. About the oily timber comment,I've wittled alot of Teatree pegs now and consider it to be an oily timber some have a feel like leather, I suppose you are suggesting oily timbers don't glue well? or suspectable to cracking? I'm just using a good quality PVA to set them in but I do try to avoid using glue at all with what I'm making at the moment, hence the question about suitable wood that's strong in small dimensions, kryky I could go on forever about woody stuff so I'll stop here. Thanks again, HarryHarry
