    Default Sliding Doors

    Hi Folks,

I was thinking of building a sliding door cabinet. What kind of ratio between width and height of each door should I be looking at to make sure the doors slide and aren't too tippy? Also, how deep should the bottom groove be? Is an 1/8th too little?

    Cheers

Pretty difficult one to offer advise on without in depth specs. Door size and weight will be major factors. I gather they will not be running on rollers/glides.

to offer reasonable advice you need to tell us the approximate dimensions of the cabinet
an idea of the internal design -- diaphram walls etc
    width of the doors
    design of the doors
what weight will be on the top of the cabinet and the span between supports
what sort of weight will be on the bottom shelf and how taht shelf is supported -- it's about deflection
what sort of joints -- sides to top and bottom -- you are going to use

1/8" seems a little shallow, for a largish cabinet I'd be thinking 5mm -- 3mm might work with a small cabinet
how will the doors track within the rails
    regards from Alberta, Canada

Well there's a few things I didn't think of... The cabinet will be around 900mm wide and around 800-900mm tall, not including legs (open to change based on dimensions of the doors and what I think looks right). Will have one central shelf. Made from 19mm thick material. Most likely it will be doweled together. I don't think it will be holding diff centre's, so let's assume minimal deflection from carried weight. The doors would be a bit more than half the width. Probably a ply panel. Runners won't be used, I just envisaged grooves.
