Default Which sliding mitre saw would you buy?

    Hi all!

I'm allowed to spend $1000 on a Sliding Compound Mitre saw to replace my schools old Dewalt DW708.

I'm trying to buy a saw that is going to last a long time. It will have light use in a school workshop mainly cutting pine.

What models, brands could you recommend?

    Advice is welcome!

    Default g'day

g'day mate. its out of your price range anyway but I would stay away from the festool saw. to start off with its a good saw but we have had 2 of them at work for 3 years or so now and there are moving parts that are starting to wear out. one of these parts is a part that keeps the guard moving and it has worn out so now when its used the guard stays up all the time. Not really safe.

I have a makita and it is excellent. Only thing it is missing is soft start which is a wonderful thing and well worth having.

I have been pretty disappointed with the makita 1216 which cost about $1100. The main problem is that the mechanism for adjusting the angle has given out. I have pulled it apart several times without being able to fix the problem. I used to have a hitachi c8fb2 which was brilliant although occasionally lacked in timber capacity. I would suggest you go for the smallest saw that will suit your needs as there seems to be a fair amount of blade flex in the 300 mm blade. My next saw will be the 10" hitachi with dual bevel. Afraid I won't ever buy another makita

Chris, as I recall there was a fault with a part and it was corrected about three years ago, just before I bought mine, which has been faultless. It wouldn't have seen the amount of work you would put them through.

I'd suggest that you contact Festool to find out what the fix is - it may still be free (particularly as it is a known fault and they wouldn't want you to talk down the Kapex now would they?).

http://youtu.be/I10K3N-UCnY. Hi Lewisc my recommendation is the Bosch dual glide not a slide. It has some inherent benefit not being a slide which may work in your favour. It retails a little over $1000 I got mine at the Brisbane Wood show 2013 with a stand for 1000 even. I'm sure haggling will help. Can't speak highly enough of it. All angle settings controlled from the front, takes yo no room behind for slides, electric brake, laser guide on or off, etc etc see the YouTube. Leg me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

I love festool equipment. I haven't used the saws though. A sander+extractor combo is on my wish list.

That Bosch looks tasty! Have there been any problems with all the moving parts?

No it runs smooth as silk. And did I mention accurate. I don't cut my box mitres on the table saw any more I cut them on the Bosch dual glide. If your near Brisbane your welcome to see.

My son-in-law has the 12" Bosch axial glide saw and is very happy with it. It has a lot of plastic parts on the adjustment mechanisms and I wondered how these would stand up over time. Gasweld have it on special with the stand for $1,099 at the moment. One thing I particularly like about this saw is because of the axial glide you don't have to allow as much space behind the saw to allow for slide rail travel. Definitely worth a look.

A very, very hard call. I've used a Makita, a Dewalt and an Hitachi and wouldn't like to split. I don't know anything about the Bosch but the reports are all good. Maybe flip a coin? I do have a soft spot for Makita, as I own numerous other tools (routers, drills etc) that serve me well. Either way, you're talking in the vicinity of a grand or more, so choose wisely!

The Kapex allows for fine bevel adjustment from the front, with what could be termed a micrometer adjuster to get fine tuning of <1 degree. This is important for those of us with eyesight that could be improved upon.

Can the Bosch do fine adjustments as easily?

I've made this comment in other threads, but I think it's worth repeating:
Make sure both sides of the fence are a single piece (compare the Makita to the Hitachi to see what I mean) as it can save you a lot of time and frustration when trying to get it all square.

Defiantly dewalt 12" purely for 2facts it's belt driven and it has manual adjustments for all angles I've been a chippie for 15 years and this droppy wins hands down my good mate also repairs tools for a living and he agrees as he knows the ins and outs of the mechanical side of things hope this helps...

I'm normally live over in the metalwork section but need to buy a saw... I've had my eye on the Bosch noted above and also the AEG slide model.

I'd really like the Bosch but not sure I can justify it. Is it really worth the extra money?

    Thx
