One gotcha is that some of my chisels have tapered sides. It's very slight, but it means I can't use a my small engineer's square to check for squareness. Embarrassingly, it took me a few goes to work this out. Lucky it was just an old beater that I got for a tenner.

I suppose in that situation you just have to eyeball it, and aim for flatness over squareness?

Oh gee, I should've done this years ago. Hollow grinding is awesome.

I thought the learning curve was steep, but it really isn't. I'm already freehand grinding new primary bevels in a few minutes and achieving nice square grinds. I'm astounded at how little work is required on the stones. It literally is four strokes on #800, 10-15 on #4000, and 30 on #8000, and I've got a spanking sharp and perfect edge. It's Marvellous! Sharpening might even become enjoyable at this rate.

I got the same grinder as you im pretty sure. I bought a 180grit CBN + the tormek jig. Once its setup its super easy to use. The other side I have a buffer for unicorn bevel and pretty much only use a cheapo 1000grit diamond plate from aliexpress for about $5! Sharpening is neither enjoyable or unpleasant, with this setup sharpening is something i dont even really think about!!

As I mentioned in an earlier post blades with parallel sides can be squared off the side of the wheel with no need to muck around with small squares at all.
