Smoothing outer edges of 300mm diameter disc
Hello, have cut a 300mm diameter circle with a bandsaw jig fitted with 1.2" bimetal blade 3tpi. The timber is 25mm thick kwila /merbau
As expected, there are vertical ridges all around the outer edge from the bandsaw blade.
Has anyone ever come across a method of smoothing these ridges, while still maintaining a true circle?regards,
Dengy

Have found a couple of circle sanding jigs for use with a vertical disc sander. Should be able to make something simple to suit

If you have a lathe with 150mm or more between the bed and the lathe axis, you can mount the blank in the lathe and use abrasive paper to remove the "vertical ridges"
Disc sander and a circle jig -- as you have found on youtube
similar circle jig sanding jig and a linisher
clamp a belt sander vertically in a vise and use a circle jig -- but a bit more faffing aroundregards from Alberta, Canada

One picture says it all .
300 is a bit tight . Ive angled the body across at something like 45 degree for a smaller radius. I better go check to see if it will do 300 .

The sole won’t flex around to 150 radius but by skewing the plane I smooth such things pretty good . Better than anything else I have for hand work on round tops .

If I was setting up a jig on a machine I think the best would be one that rotates the wood disk past a disk sander . A big one with coarse paper . As in the wood disk is sitting and rotating on a horizontal table and the sanding disk is spinning vertically . The sanding is going down past the edge and reduces the chance of spinning the wood disk out of control . That happens very easily with round things and machines if your not careful.

Table saw
How to Cut Circles on a Table Saw - YouTubeI usually just screw through the centre to a peice of mdf board or whatever and cut progressively on the panel saw until i can clamp the board dowm and then just spin the circular piece around taking off the last mm. Have cut some very big circles using this method. Can rough cut on bandsaw first it is a bit quicker.
