    A different approach to what you have, but i just made a toybox and fitted these http://www.rockler.com/woodworking/Torsion-Hinges. They work great. A little pricey but when you compare a good hinge with a strut, fairly comparable. They are also not soft close but hold the lid in any position to save those little fingers.

    Screen door closer from bunnings is not a bad suggestion, we'll under $100 for the 'quality' option from memory, and a number of choices - even a mini one, plus you have to go to there anyway
