Are you sure its South African? I lived there for the first 50+ years of my life and never came accross a timber by that name. Maybe its African.....somewhere closer to the tropics or maybe South American. I'll endeavour to find out.

A google yields the following http://www.timspec.co.nz/anegre.asp

Common Name(s) : Anegre, English Tawa, African Birch

    Botanical Name : Aningeria spp.

    DISTRIBUTION

    Ivory Coast, Ghana

    Similar to European Birch

    QUALITY STANDARDS AND GENERAL PROPERTIES

There is no marked distinction between the heart and sap wood. Colour varies from whitish to pale shades of brown and often with hints of pink.

Timber is fairly plain in appeariance however if quarter sawn sometimes shows growth ring figure. Where wavy grain is present a mottle figure is shown. The grain varies from straight to wavy, and the texture from medium to coarse.

This specie dries easily by both the air drying and kiln drying methods. However, it does have tendencies to blue stain in the early stages of drying.

Presence of silica can be very hard on tools. Chipping can occur during cross cutting, drilling and planing. Anegre glues, stains and polishes well.

This specie is not available in fixed widths. Colour variations do occur.

For a pool table you cant beat slate or marble in my opinion (for the top). For legs and shoulder etc as long as its not mdf...

My opinion is neither copyrighted nor trademarked, and its price is competitive. If you like, I'll trade for one of yours.

I saw a piece at Carbatec Perth today after my previous reply. It is pretty ordinary and I had a look at Euro Birch as well.......very similar but I definately prefer the birch over the Anegre.

Yep Ghana & Ivory coast is half a world away from South Africa, which accounts for me not stumbling accross it sooner.

    Have lotsa fun.

heres what she wrote in the email describing where the MDF is..

"""The MDF we use is in our frame and cross Members, we have been using this
for the last 15 years - we use this material because we find that there is no movement in the frame for the slate. Timber does hold some moisture and will always move a little"""

im guessing its in the 'shoulder'?

guess i'll be betta off paying that extra more for all hardwood?
