    Default Space balls

Does anyone know where I can buy space balls from? They are basically a little ball that sits in the rebate of a floating panel and as the wood expands the ball shrinks, and as the wood contacts, it inflates.

Here is a link that might explain it better - More Information on Spaceballs

    Cheers,

    Andy

If you are really desperate for space balls, Rockler have them.

Lincoln Sentry used to sell them in Australia, or else visit Clark Rubber, you should find a suitable tubing or rubber seal product you can cut to fit.

    Default Source for spaceballs

    Hi Groeniej,

I gave up that search long ago. I Cut 12 mm lengths of the 6 mm dia. rubber insert that is used to fix fly wire into ally fly screens. It works perfectly and costs about zero. Don't tell anyone else!!.

    Thanks for ther replies.

Pete, I know exactly what you are referring to. If I don't find the balls any time soon, i'll use the rubber.

I used to work for one of Australia's biggest and best known kitchen door manufactuers, they just used 4mm diam. rubber stock , cut to to 25 mm length

Ok, it's time to instal my floating panel.
I'm going to go out and buy the fly wire tubing. Just a question, should I cut the panels so they are tight again the tubing, or just just touching?
Also do I put the tubing in both the rails and stiles or just rails/stile?

I use 15 mm section of the tubing in each corner and then further sections at about 300 mm intervals depending on the size of the panel. I size the panel so it puts a little pressure on the tubing on all sides. I also fix the tubing to the panel groove with a very small drop of superglue just to make it easier to do the assembly task.

What old pete said although I would not use tubing, tests coducted at the company I mentioned showed that over time tubing will give and the panel will become loose that is why they use solid as it dose not seem to give over time and they give a five year warrenty

Not sure, I think the first thing one would need to do would be to make woodworkers aware of their existence and even then it seems there are other materials that can be used for the job that are already available.
I mentioned these to a few of the guys I know and most of them didn't know what a space ball was. Maybe I mix in the wrong circle.
    Reality is no background music.
