Span tables ?
Can anyone please explain the definition of "Continuous Span".
I realise that it relates to beams that are supported at three or more points. When using the tables for example with ceiling joists, if you have a hanging beam mid span, is the continuous span dimension taken from the top plate to the hanging beam or is it the entire dimension ie: top plate to top plate?
Confused......

If the joists span wall to wall with a hanging beam they are continuous spans
The span table shows the max distance from each wall to hanging beam.
So you can't join a couple of short joists at the HB
The HB should be roughly midways along joists.

Thanks Bob,
Im looking at what size joists to use. The wall to wall dia is 4000 with the hanging beam roughly in the middle.

Hi Neale
I was wondering what you planned to use for for your joists just put the sizes through my LVL software and you can either use a 130 x 45 lvl without a hanging beam at 600 centres or 90 x 45 with a hanging beam. while not a perfect conversion i have been told that lvls can be roughly graded as the old F11 i hope that helps. If you have ever wondered as a chippy i think LVLs and Hybeams and other engineered timbers are great

Span tables, continuous span?
Canetoad,
Yeah....good question. The span tables from the framing code when using MGP10 90x45 give Max Ceiling joist span at 2600 (450 spacing). Is this 2600 from the top plate to the hanging beam or the opposite wall top plate?
I have a 200x45 Lvl hanging beam already in place half way between the 4000 span. Can I use MGP10 90x45 or do I need to go to Lvl's?
Still a little confused.
Thanks for the help.......Neale
