Species of hardwood
What’s your ideas on this species of timber? It’s a generic shovel handle from the big green shed. According to the label it’s a sustainable plantation grown Australian hardwood. Thoughts?

RB
Somehow it doesn't look like Spotted Gum. Not too much hardwood is raised in plantations. White Gum (E, Dunnii) and Blue Gum (E,Globulus) could be candidates, possibly the former as it is a less desireable timber: In fact it's a bit like it's Latin name (pronounced Dunny eye.)

are you trying to match it to something? or just assuming the big green shed is telling fibs?
i ended up buying some laminated bamboo broom handles from there for like $5, used them in my sons pickler triangle

I can’t imagine why one would want matching shovel handles, so no, I’m not.
I just couldn’t place the timber species, and usually I’m pretty good at picking them.
I have a couple of those bamboo broom handles too, the one on the boat has been out in the weather for 5 years or so, still as good as new.

Hi RB. Looking at the 2nd photo, I wouldn't discount spotted gum. And it is a traditional choice.

For us old hands, if it is not recognisable as a known specie there is a good chance that it may be a Hybrid. With that in mind, I am inclined to go with LYPTUS. This is a hybrid of Rose Gum (Euc. Grandis) and Euc.Urophylla from the Philippines. Mainly grown in Brazil plantations but some grown in north coast NSW plantations.
The purpose of creating a hybrid was to improve insect resistance of Rose gum.
