    Question @#$%$#@ Spiders

    Happy New Year to all,
Don't know where to post this question so have put it here - my shed appears to be constantly plagued by daddy long leg spiders. I have, over the years, tried spraying [Mortein Black appears to be the most effective], as well as vacuuming spiders and webs [brief satisfaction - usually only until the next day]. Have spoken to some "pest controllers" and they seem to have a fairly common view "Nah mate, nothing seems to work on those b@$*#@*s."
    Any ideas?
    Bob

    Lightbulb Leave em Alone

Don't worry them, OR about them.

    Now!!
If it were Reddies or Trappies,
    then that's a different matter.

Even the Wolf Spiders or Huntsman Spiders I would not worry about.
Even though the Wolf and Huntsman are slightly Venomous.

They're like the Python/Carpet Snakes in the Hay Shed,
do more good than anything else,
just that some people do not like them,

So we all kill them all................NOT!!

Think positive, the webs collect all the airborne dust.
We get dozens of them in the house, one weekend and it looks like a scene from Dracula, bloody webs everywhere.
The joys of living in the sticks.

Default Daddy Long Legs vs Red Backs

Not sure if it is an urban myth or based on fact. Have heard somewhere (no ideal where) that if you have Daddy Long Legs, you are less likely to have Red Backs. Territorial sort of thing.

Have also heard that the Daddy long legs are very venomous, but the nature of their fangs is such that they cannot deliver the venom to Humans. Either too soft or too short.

This could of course all be totally wrong.

If so, there are a number of Daddy long legs in my shed in Australia that have enjoyed a free ride for a few years.

    Steve,
I've heard both sides of this one
Also heard it was a 'April Fool's Joke'..................

    THAT sounds most realistic.

    ME??

Myth on both counts, in fact Mythbusters did a spiel on the Daddylonglegs recently and the skinny one managed to get himself bitten.
I have just about every species of spider available in Vic and Daddy Longlegs happily cohabitate with the Latrodectus Haselti.
All spiders are venomous, just that with some the venom either fails to react on humans or is just too weak.
I have a passion for these little beasts and used to have a collection until SWMBO to a dislike to them all in the house.
Most spiders are not aggressiive and redbacks will rarely bite unless provoked.
The redbacked redback is the female and the male is just a harmless shabby looking brown thing.

    Default Mythbusters

    Thanks Iain.

Will look Mythbusters up. Sounds interesting.

Have they looked at the reasons and myths behind activities in Iraq?

Don't know, but given a suitable amount of explosive material I'm sure they could achieve more in one episode than all the troops in two years
(I believe they cheat, there are only two of them on the show but I suspect there is another one behind the scenes).

Thanks Ivan, they don't bother me particularly - I just don't like to face first the webs or when reaching for a tool get a handful of web -- we do get the odd redback here but all are very much aware of the tangled/messy webs which are the usual indicators of these little charmers. We also do get other visitors on a fairly regular basis - I have included them below so that they can say G'day.
    Regards,

Friend of mine in the NE of the State had a black snake in the wall of his house, it finally died of old age or whatever and the bats became a real noisy smelly problem.
He has tried to entice one back in but is not having much luck.

I don't understand why you still have a problem with spiders. Ever since we were invaded by these Asian house geckos that seem to have taken over Brisbane there isn't a spider to be seen. All I've got to deal with now is gecko s**t everywhere.

I encourage the spiders, especially the orb-weavers of which there are hundreds in my yard - the place looks like it's been coated with tinsel after a heavy dew. The main benefit is that I simply don't have a problem with insects. Cockies, flies, mozzies all go to feed the spiders instead of annoying me. There are also a few reddies in the roof and a heap of daddy long-legs but all the huntsmans seem to have left the building.

Just on the subject of redbacks - I've never seen one aggressive unless it was guarding a web and even then they're not very aggro. I've had them crawling on my hand on more than one occasion after reaching into a roof to grab a piece of cable or what-have-you.

Leave the little buggers be is my advice.
    Cheers,
    Craig

    Bob,
You're attacking the wrong problem. The spiders are only there because there is food available to them. Get rid of the ants, termites, silverfish and what not. The spiders will leave on their own.
