Default Where can I get splint for weaving seats ?

A look that I quite like. But never have done it before.

Wondering where I can go to buy an affordable quantity of it.

    Any tips appreciated.

    Thanks.

What look are you after - the only materials that I can remember having seen used for woven seats are split cane and raffia?

If its cane mesh or the cane rounds that hold the mesh in seats / panels ect, you can purchase it by the metre at R.B.Gray, Evans Rd Salisbury in Brisbane. It is known as Rattan mesh.

The mesh comes in 600mm width with different woven patterns available and sold by the meter. The cane you buy it by the length.

To apply this stuff, make sure you work with it raw first (stain or Lacquer it later) soak it before you put it on , it becomes more workable and plyable .When it dries, it will shrink and pull up tight. If you dont wet it you can never get it tight enough and run the risk of cracking when you are going around curves. Hope this helps.

    Jake,

I just recently did one (re-caned an old chair that my wife had used as a child) and it came off very well. If you are re-caning an old one, measure the groove width carefully, as the spline comes in several sizes and you want the tightest you can get whilst still leaving room for the woven cane to be knocked into the groove. If you're making a new one, well of course you know what size you made.

The traditional method for caning is to use pearl glue (hide glue), since chairs will need re-caning from time to time and the glue can be softened. I found a really good caning instruction sheet which I will post when I can once locate it again.

It is a messy job, but worth the effort IMO. Best of luck.
    Cheers,

    Bob

You are right and he got his cane from another member. It's in his WIP thread on the Redbird canoe.

    Jake,

I tried to locate plastic (split cane) to mend some outdoor barbque setting chairs. coudn't find a lead anywhere. Ended up up enlisting a taxi driver in Bali to find a manufacturer. near the Airport. Got 2.5 KG for 112000 Rp and ataxi fare of 80000 Rp about $27.00

By the way the chair fixed up great. The damage was to the binding round the metal perished by the sun and other elements.

    Cheers

Try this place Jake. It's an old link that I haven't checked recently, they used to sell both woven and strip cane. If you want to weave it yourself, arm yourself with a heap of golf tees to lock the strips in the holes.

I tried some years ago to get wooden splint for weaving seats, (I think it was ash or/and hickory) found nothing in australia, but found a site overseas, unfortunately cant remember who they were.

thanks everyone. I'll checkout spotlight and that site. thank you kindly.

I don't know exactly what I want Jeremy. Just noticed in a mag a 'shaker' style rocking chair, with a woven seat and I found it appealing. Thinking of making one for my wife, but then I thought the kids would probably put their feet through it.

Thinking smaller width type cane. Don't like the big buffy stuff so much. Though I'd imagine it wouldn't take as long to put together.

You were right Dingo, I did do the canoe seats with cane and JMK you were right I did get it from Matt who had spare. I found, like Outsider, I was after "split plastic cane" for out door purposes and found no-one in Oz. Matt got it from HH Perkins (US). If I could source it in Oz I would have ... by the way outsider ... that was a good price!
