Where to get big square-head bolts?
Where can I get big square-head bolts, either mail order, or else in NSW, ACT or VIC?
What its for is, I've got some 8"x4" recycled hardwood that I want to bolt together with 6" bolts. I reckon if the head was about 3/4" or 1" across it would look right. Yeah, hex-head is the compromise, but won't look as good.

G'day Gunnadoit,
The only place i've seen square head bolts
is in old bridge beams etc. I think they're a
thing of the past, but how about coach bolts?
They have the round heads and they are readily
accessible at bunnings etc
cheers
col.

if i needed them badly enough i would make em myself.
easy get bolts the length you need ( or 1/2 inch longer )cut the heads off . get some 1x3/8 flat or 1x 1/4 drill holes the size of the bolt shank poke the bolt shank in and weld it up , clean it up with a grinder .
or you could use the same method with a few lengths of booker rod ( all thread )and a hand full of nuts and make the bolts what ever length you like . thats what i use on farm when long bolts of different lenths are needed . as in for a tank stand or gate posts and so on
ps painted black would be quite effective

Closest I've seen are tee bolts. Not a cheap option though.

be easier to use all thread and make square nuts for each end

Thanks guys for those suggestions. Yeah, Col, could do coachbolts but won't on this occasion. Its that squarehead, heavy bridge-bolt look I'm after.
And those Unbrako tee bolts - check those prices. Holey cheeses.
Well, I hadn't thought of welding on new heads onto threaded rod or sawnoff hex bolts, but unless anyone else can think of a supplier of ready mades I'll have to do it - but damn, one more process! Prefer if anyone can think of a supplier. ... mmm? anyone?

Get some all thread of appropriate size.
Get some 1" bar of appropriate thickness and cut squares
Drill the squares and jamb all thread in. Weld end closed.
Clean up head on grinder. Better still on lathe.
How many do you need and do you need nuts as well

set screws only have a very small head in relation to the thread size , if you were to use them on timber you would need to put a washer behind the head
and it still would not be very successful

Yep washer would probably be needed.

I don't think set screws really have the right proportions.
Welding a square nut to threaded rod then grinding the head makes more sense as a fabricated solution, I agree there. Either way there'd need to be a washer, for mechanical reasons and to make it look right. I'm doing four of them.

Have you checked the salvage yards?
I picked up some 3/4" x 8" bolts with large square heads and large square nuts and big thick washers a few years back for, I think, 50 cents each. A little rust was free!
Cheers
